Graphene and carbon nano tube technology is looking promising and less expensive. They also study it at MIT.

It was excellent if you haven't seen it it is really worth watching.
To bad a small ion engine can be put on it, then it could go out after Voyager, which is traveling 11 miles per sec and is the fastest man made object. That would go around the earth 2 1/2times in an hour. Then you wouldn't need gravity assit.
