A STII TWOK?

James Wright

Commodore

In Star Trek II TWOK why would any information about the Genesis Device be stored on the Enterprise computer? The Enterprise was a training ship,
wouldn't the Reliant have the data since it was looking for a lifeless planet to test the Genesis Device?

JDW

Reliant wouldn't need any data on the project beyond the fact that they were looking for a lifeless moon/planet. And Khan wouldn't know that Kirk's Enterprise was now a training ship. Plus, in the interim Kirk became an admiral (again), so in Khan's mind who else but Kirk would have the data on his ship?

But Kirk had access to the materials - like the project video he had sent over from SF. I don't know if anything was kept on the Enterprise locally, but it seems that Kirk had no trouble getting things from the Starfleet network, and there may have been a local copy kept after he accessed it.

Perhaps Kahn was working from the position that Starfleet's communications net would allow for near instant information. Sort of a Internet on Warp crack...

It probably would. But only if one had the retina of an Admiral to show. Khan didn't, and he probably had already figured out that he needed one.

A related but "behind the scenes" question.
The sequence showing the simulation was revolutionary for comp generated effects and was in essence the birth of Pixar, yet memory-alpha doesn't mention this. Why not?

I always figured that Kirk, as an Admiral, would have access to these sensitive files and be able to access them should it be necessary. Kinda like logging into a password sensitive site.

In the novelization and some deleted scenes (or maybe the TV version) it mentions Kirk is on the General Staff. Leading me to believe he was a higher up in the Fleet.

Ok, I'll bite, JDW: Why do you start every threat title with the indefinite article "a"?

I wondered that myself. My first thought when I read this thread title was "A STII TWOK?" There's more than one??

They did a few months ago. I remember reading it. Feel free to sign up and add it into the relevant articles if its been removed.

Checking his thread-starting history many of his threads are "(a/sometimes not) (subject)?"

Hey, JDW. JUST TYPE OUT "QUESTION"!! Makes things a bit easier.

Probably because no one has thought to write that in yet maybe? Bout the best I can think of.
