A series structure for Enterprise

What do you think of this as an overall structure for Enterprise?

The first three seasons would be the exploration years with the Romulan threat slowly emerging from behind the scenes.

The next three seasons would cover the period of the Romulan War with a two-year jump between Season 5 and Season 6.

The seventh and final season would cover the aftermath of the Romulan War up to the signing of the Federation charter.

It's cool to ponder how differently the series might've gone. Season 3 was the best of them, there were some interesting stories. But ... overall, the throw-away episodes of ENT were pretty bad, usually. Like that one where Hoshi is kidnapped by some lonely, desperate alien, with a bad complexion. Egads ... I would've loved to have seen what script(s) got passed over, in favour of it.

In the fourth season, though, the stories were better structured and arranged, but they lacked the vitality of the previous seasons ... the passion. And there was entirely too much concern with tying in the show in with The Classic Series, at that point. Surak didn't need to be in it and I did not care for how he was portrayed. And who knew that T'Pau was such a cute pixie, in her time? But her story and world were surprisingly kind of lame. Andoria was given much more attention and interest, possibly due to the popularity of Shran.

Am I the only one who can't stand Mirror Universe episodes? Not only that it was a 2 parter. Oh, but I get to see T'Pol's midrift ... who cares? Seeing her wearing nothing but a hand-bra was already a familiar sight by this episode. One really good season out of 4 OK ones ... that's not the way to go. I would've loved to have seen much stronger writing for ENT, than what we actually got. It was mainly the quality of the cast that made the series special and worth watching. Casting has always been one of STAR TREK's strongsuits, which is particularly evident, here.

Honestly, I think a series about the Romulan War/founding of the Federation was a mistake right from the start. I think every Star Trek fan had a preconceived notion of how those events unfolded in their heads, and ENT IMHO was the furthest possible scenario from that. Instead of showing Earth and spaceflight in general at a much more primitive time, the show looked and felt like Star Trek: Voyager (or TNG jr.) only with a different ship and crew.

If they had it in their heads to do a prequel, they should have done something along the lines of Harve Bennett's original idea for STV: the Academy years with young Kirk and Spock.

they had the idea to have the entire first season on earth
dealing with the struggles of getting the project off the ground
