A sequel to Watchmen...

Ultimale

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
...not the film, Moore's story itself.

Having just recently finished it and now in my second reading, I think there's certainly potential for a sequel. There are characters at the end who speak of their futures, and there's a "brave new world" to explore, created by the ending of the story.

So...could/should it be done? And if so, what's the story? Something to do with Rorschach's diary being discovered? Maybe involving some new costumed heroes?

Yes, right after Citizen Kane II: The Resurrection.

As tempting as it may be, I think the book should forever stand on it's own. I almost feel that a film adaptation is going a bridge too far, but I'm going to keep an open mind since it's really a separate entity. As far as further comics? Unless Moore, Gibbons and Higgins are directly involved (and the chances of that are astronomically nil) I say no way; And even then I would be a bit dubious.

Could it be done? Sure. There's nothing stopping DC; they own the characters. (One of the worlds of the post-Infinite Crisis multiverse was supposed to be the Watchmen universe, but DC backed away from that.) I think the only thing stopping DC from doing something else with the world of Watchmen is that they don't want to antagonize Alan Moore any further. But eventually someone at DC is going to say, "Y'know, Alan Moore isn't going to come back to us and do any work, we have these characters we're not exploiting, so let's do something with them." So, yes, it absolutely could be done.

Should it be done? That's a dicier question. If Dave Gibbons approved, I'd be okay with it. (Gibbons has given his approval to the Watchmen video game, for instance.)
