A Sequel Difficulty

One difficulty that people are talking about in sequels and for the new Star Trek universe is how will Spock Prime influence events.

Characters lives changed because of Nero and the repercussions of the Kelvin being attacked and Vulcan being destroyed. But there are natural events and larger scale cosmic events that would not be influenced by this, therefore, on the horizon.

For example:

The Doomsday Machine
The Probe that wants to talk to the whales
V'Ger
The Borg

Luckily, TOS most often dealt with particular situations on particular worlds rather than with big galaxy altering events, so this won't be a huge problem right away.

But would Spock be expected to warn Starfleet about certain matters to prevent pain and death that may result?

Or will he quietly help establish a Vulcan colony as a Vulcan elder and "have faith that the universe will unfold as it should"?

This is a tough question and one I hope the writers thought of before leaving Old Spock in this universe.

But I must say, I am very, very happy he's there. I'm glad he didn't die or disappear, even if we don't get to see him in another movie.

I think canon is out the window and the creators have the unique position of deciding what they want to do next. For example, with Vulcan being destroyed, does Tuvok exist? I'm sure the Vulcans were important to many treaties and alliances. That ace in the hole is gone. And where do Vulcans make their new home? I'd be disappointed if they call it Vulcan.

I think there will be a few difficulties, but not for canon. I assume canon is yesterday's Enterprise. :)

It's actually a great goto for them. As long as Nimoy's around to play the part (stay healthy, Leonard!) he can always pop up to say "Hold on a sec, there's something you should know. Essentially, he is the new timeline's Gandalf.

That whale thing though, he might want to take care of that himself.

Even though I started a topic in the Movies forum about a subject similar to this (just to spark discussion), I don't believe it's wise to rehash old stories.

No Khan, no whale probe, no v'ger and so on. Just new and exciting things should do very well, thank you very much.

I think old Spock, young Spock, T'Pol, and Tuvok should team up and

rebuild Vulcan by reversing the polarities of space-time using the magic red matter.

But that's just me, apparently.:(

About a potential sequel, I don't think we'll see The Doomsday Machine or City on the Edge of Forever. Nero's ship basically did what the Doomsday Machine did and I don't think they're going to go back to time travel right away. The most logical candidate I think would be Space Seed. No-brainer here. Maybe they can utilize the original Wrath of Khan script, which had Kirk discovered Khan had escaped and become head of this new empire.

Can they really do the whale thing anymore? It would bring up some inconsistencies as far as time travel goes.

Spock: Kirk, you have to go back in time, get some whales, and put them in the ocean.

Kirk: But if I go back in time, wouldn't that just create an alternate universe like when you and Nero did it?

Spock: ah....hmmm....Well, you see....

Kirk: I mean, the universe can't be that inconsistent.

Spock: No, all you need is a good writer. I mean, come on kid! "Red matter"?

I disagree. I think going back in time to save the whales didn't change the entire universe the way this movie did. I mean...it stopped something from blowing up. They didn't really alter anything in the past all that much. So some people saw them. So some people knew what was going on. That's only a handful. When Nero came back, he came back in a big way. He influenced the lives of hundreds of people when he first came out, and then millions when he blew up Vulcan. He changed things.

All kirk and spock did was steal a couple of whales.

Another Vulcan I wonder about is Spock's fiance, T'Pring. If they ever wanted to do a love triangle, she'd be the most likely choice. It would again tear Spock between two worlds.

Spock said it himself: He can be in two places at once. Besides, since the timeline has been changed it's not for certain what will happen next, making Old Spock only a tiny bit less clueless than New Spock and a whole bunch of years older.

I wasn't asking what they should do in sequels, I was really asking how this would work within the new universe-- I'm inquiring about the fictional world, not the Paramount studio decision about what to do next.

Also, remember that the timeline changes impact the characters, Starfleet, political events, etc. But they don't change natural events-- like, say, an asteroid from hitting a planet or long-term alien based events, like the Borg.

I have a feeling they will kill off Spock prime. Hopefully something heroic or quiet, and not getting shot in the back or something.
