I agree to an extent, or rather I see where you're coming from, but Mondasian cybermen were "us" to an degree as well. They were originally humanoids, very similar to us, living on a planet that orbited the very same sun.

Whereas modern cybermen tap into our technology-obsessed culture, classic cybermen did exactly the same job for people of the 60s. The fears were different (transplant surgery, plastic surgery,etc), but the central idea is basically unchanged.

It works in theory, and the concept is basically the same, but we didn't have many Sally Phelan scenes with the old Cybermen, did we? We knew what the Cybermen were, but Cybermen stories didn't really dwell on it all that much.

Well there are some quite nasty bits in Attack of the Cybermen regarding those guys who were part cyberised and especially what happened to Lytton...

I don't see how Cybermen covered in blood soaked bandages, part man part machine wouldn't be scary these days (although if they did it like Torchwood...) if anything the current method of upgrading is kinda sanitized.

I don't think they'd get away with the blood-soaked part, they show very little blood on the show, it would work in making it scary but I don't think they'd do it in Who.

But they are their mobiles...

Yeah, it's too neat. Clean. The terror comes from the concept of lost individuality, which is absolutely cool, but the original cybes had that and the prospect of bodily mutilation.

I'd love to see Tenth Planet cybermen redesigned for the new series, cloth faces and all.
