A retrospective of My Little Ponies cartoons

Showdown

Here's something for My Little Ponies cartoon fans. I'm not a fan, but I know there's a few here. I came across this video of a fanmade retrospective of the franchise's older cartoons.

http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/vi...pisode-57-my-little-pony-retrospective-part-1

My favorites one of these retrospectives is his Ghostbusters, Animaniacs, and Freakazoid videos.
(BTW, I'm not making fun of fans of the Ponies cartoon. I have no right to, since there's a really bad cartoon that I like.)

G1 had it's decent moments, but for me, it's all about G4 MLP:FiM.

Thanks for the vid link.

I'd never been to that site before, but I have enjoyed random "Nostalgia Critic" reviews in the past.

The humor was enjoyable, even if I still don't really get the Pony-Craze. (Of course I've only seen the first episode of the series and I hear it wasn't indicative of the series overall)
Gargoyles was a great and fantastic animated series, yet they can't even get the 2nd half of Season 2 out on DVD. *sigh*

You can watch full episodes of MLP:FiM because YouTube has all of them. I've got it linked to Ep 3, "Ticket Master" but you can see whatever episodes you like. I highly recommend episodes 10, 11, 12, 16, 17, 23, 25 and 26 .

Ponies are annoying. DOWN with the ponies!

Don't be silly. Ponies are about friendship and harmony through the virtues of loyalty, laughter, kindness, generosity, and honesty.

Yup, the current Pony craze and the Brony fandom started last year with the new G4 "reboot" series "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic".

Lauren Faust significantly altered the show, the look, the writing, the target demographic, the depth of story and character development.

I personally haven't even really seen any of the G1-3 stuff since Primary school when my sister and the girls there played with them. The new show is quite different altogether.

No one thought The Powerpuff Girls would reach anyone beyond the young female graphic, and it did. Strangely enough, Lauren Faust worked on that series AND MLP. :)

Anyway, this show is to MLP as Beast Wars was to the Transformers franchise that preceded it. That is to say, FULL OF AWESOME.

And ponies.

Mark

It is a fantastic show, and its only getting better. Yup Lauren worked on Powerpuff Girls and Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends, both of which I watched and enjoyed back in the day.

Ugh watched through the video and its probably just as well I didn't bother with G1-3, its really hard to believe its the same franchise, even if some of the Ponies carried over to G4 they're so different.

I mean, G3 and G3.5...:wtf:

G 3.5... my niece got a 3.5 Rainbow Dash for her birthday. The current Rainbow Dash would throw up. "I'm an earth pony?! And I'm like Rarity?! EWWWWW!!!!" And don't get me started on Scootaloo! I saw a clip of 3.5 and I was grossed out. It makes Barney look like CSI or NYPD Blue!

I only remember seeing midnight castle waaaayyyyyy back when on TV. I was more impressed with the villain than the ponies.

I don't think I could manage watching everything without putting my head through the screen at some point.

Obviously, I'm no Brony.

The MYLP thing has gone too far.

Way, way, too far. Some people have even taken it to a damn near-creepy sexual fetish/fascination.

People like the show, great. It's a cartoon for seven-year-old girls. But whatever. But, Christ, it has taken over people to insane levels.

The same can be said of any popular fan movement. I'm sure in 1972, when 3,000 Star Trek fans crammed into a meeting hall, there were observers thinking "it's a silly show about space. The level by which this fandom has taken it is to the extreme!"

I believe you once had an avatar of you sitting in the Captain's chair on the bridge of the Enterprise-D. Did you know it was a fictional TV show? Did it lessen your enjoyment of the experience? When it comes to the more gratuitous arm of the fandom, I'm sure typing "Star Trek" and "porn" will net you more than a few results, such as the recent XXX porn movie based on the TNG cast.

Too far? Maybe, but you still like Star Trek, and what naysayers and critics say to you doesn't matter, because you love your show. It means something to you. This means something to me, and every other brony.

Yes, my sitting on the bridge of the Enterprise at The Experience is exactly the same thing as having a sexual fetish towards a cartoon pony.

Being into Star Trek, or any TV series for adults, is also exactly the same thing as being obsessed with a cartoon series aimed towards grade-school girls.

Whoa, nellie! Firstly, you're assuming everyone who is into MLP:FiM does so for sexual reasons. That is simply not the case at all. There are arms of the fandom that do that, but that's what Rule 34 addresses (that if it exists, someone will make porn of it). It also shows you missed my main point that just because there are sexual aspects of any fandom, it doesn't cover the entire fandom. Hence, my example of the XXX Star Trek TNG porno.

Your second point, about a cartoon aimed at grade school girls is inaccurate as well. Lauren Faust intentionally created her brand on the show to appeal to adults and children alike. While the show was made for young girls to enjoy a substantial, thoughtful cartoon, it was aimed at people of all ages and walks of life.

The appeal of the show, for people like me and most bronies in general, is the strong, positive core on which it's based. So much television programming is negative and dark. MLP:FiM is a positive, uplifting cartoon filled with fun, quirky, and memorable characters.

Also, John de Lancie is one of the voice artists on the show, so for me that's just extra appeal. :D

All fine, well, and good. (Though I'd quibble that the appeal aspect towards adults was done to make adults "forced" to watch the show with their daughters get entertainment, not that the show's creators intended for the show's core audience to be fully grown men.)

I've seen the "sexualized" aspect of the ponies come across a lot so it strikes me as a core part of the fandom.

But all of that aside, I think the show's viewers have taken it way too far, bringing the "Friendship is magic!" aspect into things way too much.

That's just it. The show's viewers have taken it way too far. Watch the show and you like it, fine.

Take it to the extreme that the "Bronies" have the last couple of months? Too far.

You can quibble, but that's from the show producer and creator's own mouth, and I didn't say fully grown men, I said people of all ages and walks of life. There's no focus on just grown men, the focus is on young women, but the show is aimed at people of all ages. I must make this sticking point clear so you understand. Lauren Faust is the same person who created "The Powerpuff Girls", and worked on "Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends". She excels at producing cartoons with an adult flavor.

Though it isn't a core part of the fandom, there are people who like the sexual aspect of it. It's anthropomorphic art, something not at all uncommon in the mainstream.

But all of that aside, I think the show's viewers have taken it way too far, bringing the "Friendship is magic!" aspect into things way too much.

Friendship is magic. Value your friends. The Elements of Harmony are Laughter, Loyalty, Honesty, Kindness and Generosity. There is a sixth, referred to as "magic", which emphasizes the idea that these elements create a unique bond between friends. How is that "too far"? In a cynical world, it's nice to hear someone say it's okay to love people for who they are, and to trust your friends.

Take it to the extreme that the "Bronies" have the last couple of months? Too far.
To the extreme of what? Posting on message boards? Going to conventions? Making music videos? Watching the TV show? Sounds like another fandom of which I am most comfortably familiar. In fact, it sounds like a lot of fandoms.

Where is the extremism?

What extreme? Having pony avatars? Posting a thread for discussion of the show?

We value the show's moral: Love your friends.

And of course there's fans who get some kind of sexual entertainment from it. In this large of a fandom, there's going to be people who like drawing Rule 34 art, but is that everyone who likes the show? Generalization gets you nowhere.
