A request for thoughts/prayers.

Sorry to hear this Flux. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Flux hang in there. It may look grim, but you can handle whatever hand you're dealt.

We're here for you.

Thanks guys. He's currently going in to surgery, as he's developed an ischemic bowel. They're concerned his heart won't be strong enough to make it through the surgery, but there really isn't much choice in the matter. The next few hours will be very critical.

Wow, that is just awful. Your family having so much to deal with. Sending good thoughts and prayers for your uncle, Flux.

He went in for surgery today, and was immediately deemed unfit for the operation due to the fact that he went into cardiac arrest on the table. They got him back with CPR, and have ruled out the surgery as an option. In a way this is a good thing because the surgery would have left him needing a colostomy, which could end up causing its own set of issues with infection. They've started a new type of antibiotic for his colitis and its a wait and see deal with that. The ventilator seems to be helping, my aunt says he seems warmer and has better color then he did before they intubated.

One really big scare happened late last night...he woke up for the first time since he's been intubated. I can only imagine the shock of waking up with a tube down your throat that wasn't there when you fell asleep. My aunt had to hold down one arm, and my cousin the other while the nurses sedated him again.

I'll keep updating as this unfolds. This has been quite tough on all of us but we've all really come together as a family, as well as our family friends. My biggest fear in all of this is due to the fact that my cousin just had his second child, and my uncle could end up never meeting his newest grandson...that's just heartbreaking to me, and I hope that gives him even more will to fight. He's been a fighter his whole life, so I hope he has it in him to keep it up.

To put some faces to all of this, here's a family picture from Christmas '07. That's my uncle in the plaid sweater vest, and my aunt to his right in the purple.

Poor guy. That must have been scary indeed. Continued good wishes for him. I hope the ventilator and the antibiotics do their work.

Update:

In the past couple of weeks, there have some big changes for my uncle, and thankfully they've all been for the better. His heart rate has begun to return to normal, he doesn't appear to be experiencing the pain and discomfort in his side which seems to suggest the antibiotics have been working. They've removed the ventilator and he's awake and breathing on his own, although he is slightly out of it. A few times he would say things which made it clear he thought he was back in his wheelchair, and some of the things he says just don't make sense. It'll be a while before he's back to his normal state mentally. They say he isn't totally out of the woods yet, but he's much better off than he was weeks ago when doctors were basically giving him a death sentence.

Thanks again for all the thoughts and prayers, I have to believe they had an effect.

That's great to hear. Do they have any additional treatments planned for him as he gets his strength back?

This is good to hear. As much as medical science has advanced in the current age, a lot of it still is a guessing game. Just remember that even the worst prognosis isn't absolutely set in stone.

That's great to hear flux.

And I know this is a bit belated but just letting you know thoughts and prayers are coming from my end as well.
