A real Corbomite Maneuver Alien

1241_2_lg.jpg

Zombie Balok!

If they decide to revisit the First Federation in the new series, they should just use that prop, as-is. Because that's terrifying.

I don't think there's ever been an episode in any of the series that showed a "real" "Corbomite alien". It's possible Balok just made up a design, rather than basing it on any existing alien. Of course, since Balok represented the First Federation, it's possible that the blue aliens were another member of that federation. But we never saw or heard about the First Federation again, either, so who knows?

Balok did state that you'd hardly be frightened of me would you! Which as a kid I actually was and found him more scary than the puppet!

I wonder if the original intent was that pure-bred Vulcans looked sorta like this puppet guy. Spock claims that he reminds him of his father, which, having later seen Mark Lenard in the role, we assume meant in personality type rather than appearance, yet in "Mudd's Women," Harry Mudd inspects Spock and asks if he's part Vulcanian. This always suggested to me that, when written, the assumption was that Spock looked like a human with some Vulcan characteristics, which tipped off Mudd. Mudd's line becomes a little weird after we learn that all Vulcans look exactly like Spock... why shouldn't Mudd have simply asked if he was a Vulcan, rather than of mixed heritage?

Yeah same here! I always wondered if The Vulcans looked similar to the puppet because of Spock's words and that he probably looked more human due to his ancestry but now we know it must have been his manner he was talking about rather than his appearance!

Ah well, that's clearly not the direction they went, but it's something I always wondered about.

Really, I found him quite charming and rather endearing. Here's a guy that's put on all this shtick to basically suss out various cultures he encounters, to find one that would be willing to provide a companion, a friend. Pretty touching and not at all intimidating or frightening. That tranya looked pretty tasty and refreshing too. I have to say though, I'd hate to be the one that had to wander around for however long it took to find and repair/replace one of those light bulbs if it blew out!!!!

As for the scarecrow, it could be just from Balok's imagination of an effective intimidating presence, or alternately, it could be an ossified member of the Fen Domar that he happened to just have lying around (like Trelane's Salt Vampire) that serendipitously proved effective for the fright impact he was seeking to engender.

Yes he was quite friendly but that creepy voice and the intimation that this child alien was probably much, much older than he appeared! Plus Clint howard is an odd looking chap anyway in my opinion!

Don't know why I never thought of this before...

A crew-member uses the Balok puppet for a ventriloquist act on "talent night".

Ever wonder what happened to Balok's puppet? Crewman Jones nabbed it before the Fesarius left.
Afterwards, well, the ship's weekly talent show was never quite the same.

Hmmm...Balok, Blalock....concidence?

Had them for a few years, not sure where I found them originally. I think the prop was auctioned and these pics were published. Here are the rest. :)

As I recall many of the episodes had a picture of the puppet from Corbomite Manouvere at the end of the credits and having missed that episode I always wondered what show this alien was from as I could usually recognise which show most of the pictures behind the credits were from.

Speaking of Balok.
A little bit of shameful self promotion ;)
