A random wiff

What do you think someone's impression of STAR TREK Would be if they happened upon such classics as "AN THE CHILDREN SHALL LEAD" / "THE NAKED NOW" / "MOVE ALONG HOME and what ever clunckers from Voyager and Enterprise you might include?

Their impression would be that STAR TREK sucked. I find it incredible that some folks get irked at people like Abbrams, and Harve Bennett, when they give an honest opinion about Star Trek. We, as fans right here on this board, bitch about TOS season three, and TNG's season one, and Enterprise as a whole it seems. But when an outsider gives their view? Its holy war...

Not all of STAR TREK (s) is classic. Some of it is quite embarrassing and we all know it. So, you TREK fans that cry bloody hell when an honest opinion of Star Trek is made, you need to step back and look at the bigger picture. Star Trek, no matter if you're talking about TV--MOVIES--BOOKS--FanFic (mine of course always being awesome), is far from perfect. Our horse is not that high..

But when its good...its good.

Interesting question - I suspect most people who like SF would not reject a show after seeing only one episode? However I see your point.

Well, it's a bit like when you're bitching about your husband to your girlfriends: you of course can say what you want, but would defend him to the death if your friends say anything.

I know there are lousy episodes of Trek. I know that, but I also know there is some brilliant Trek, too. I just think that sometimes people who critiscise it don't know the difference.

I think someone like JJABRAMS, and Harve Bennett before him, being in the industry know exactly what they are talking about. Bennett angered fans of TREk with some of what he said, and so has Abbrams. I think most of what Bennett did for STAR TREK turned out good (even V). We come at it as fans, they come at it as producers. Until I see Abbram's trek, I can't fault him for anything he said because, for the most part, i agree with what he has said.

I think sometimes people who criticize it haven't ever actually sat down and watched an episode all the way through.

I have an Internet friend, for example, who claims to loathe scifi, yet she loves both the book and the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. This just baffles me. If you like that movie and that book...why would you reject all other scifi, particularly when you haven't seen any? I do not get it.

Do you really think that? Can you honestly say that those of us who didn't care for "SPOCKS BRAIN" or "AND THE CHILDREN SHALL LEAD" really didn't get it??? Can you blame someone like Abrams, who upon seeing one of Treks many turkeys, for saying it just wasnt that good, or that they didn't get it??? NEMESIS was not a good movie, it just wasn't..and I "GOT" it. And for those of you who liked it, well good...but over all impression from fans, and reviewers, is that is sucked. It did. And I "GOT" that one too.

Not sure what you mean..

^ Robert, what I don't get is people who haven't seen Trek at all and claim to dislike it. Like the friend I mentioned above. I didn't say anything about "Spock's Brain."

I don't mind people simply criticizing Star Trek, what really pisses me off is people disimissing all of it as crap because all they've seen of it was poor. To me the most infuriating example is someone reviewing "Star Trek" episodes on another site. Whenever he brings up TNG, he only talks about the bad parts, totally ignoring all the good it did. As someone who grew up enjoying "Star Trek", he says he was excited when TNG premiered, watched the first season and thought it was boring with people just standing around talking the whole time, and gave up on it right then and there.

Despite apparently never watching the show after season 1, he later offhandedly mentions in a review of "The Enemy Within" how it's a perfect example of why "Star Trek" is better than TNG, because the character or Riker is so boring that his double is exactly the same as him in the episode where he's split in two. So he bases his opinion on the terrible first season, and one lackluster later season episode.

The same hater also wrote a vicious and unfair attack on "First Contact", saying it made the TNG movies 0 for 4 and is worse and less watchable than Star Trek V, but other than that, all of his opinions on TNG were based on stuff from the series that everyone can agree sucks. I just hate closed-minded unfair generalizing like that more than anything when it comes to pop culture opinions.

I think you raise some good points, and I think you might have raised one of them inadvertently, and that is: what one person considers to be "good" Trek another considers to be a poor example. For example, I consider Second Chances to be an absolute standout episode for the Riker character for a whole host of reasons, but you feel it's lacklustre. We both like Trek, but even we have different views on what the "good" and poorer episodes are. :)
