a question about firefox?

Mozilla Firefox is a free and open source[10] web browser descended from the Mozilla Application Suite and managed by Mozilla Corporation. As of September 2011, Firefox is the second most widely used browser, with approximately 25% of worldwide usage share of web browsers.[11][12][13] The browser has had particular success in Germany and Africa, where it is the most popular browser with 50%[14] and 35%[15] usage respectively.
To display web pages, Firefox uses the Gecko layout engine, which implements most current web standards in addition to several features that are intended to anticipate likely additions to the standards.[16]
Features include tabbed browsing, spell checking, incremental find, live bookmarking, a download manager, private browsing, location-aware browsing (also known as "geolocation") based exclusively on a Google service[17] and an integrated search system that uses Google by default in most localizations. Functions can be added through extensions, created by third-party developers,[18] of which there is a wide selection, a feature that has attracted many of Firefox's users.
Firefox runs on various operating systems including Microsoft Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, FreeBSD, and many other platforms. Its current stable release is version 8.0, released on November 8, 2011.[19]

so it's a form of a google not a thing to run movies on. okay thanks I was'nt sure a friend was recomending it to me and I all ready have chrome google so I don't need firefox do I?

It's not a form of "google." Firefox is an internet browser, Google is a search engine. Chrome Google is a browser too. Now, if you need it, it's another matter. I don't know how good Chrome is, but choosing a browser is like choosing a car--you want a safe, fast and reliable one.

Firefox, Internet Explorer, Chrome, and Safari are examples of web browsers that you use to access websites on the Internet. Some people prefer the look or features of one browser over another. The default browser on Windows PCs is Internet Explorer, and the default browser on Macs is Safari. If you think these are adequate for your needs then you don't need to download another browser. However, if you like the features of Firefox or Chrome, you can download and use those as well. If you are already using Chrome and have no issues with it, then you probably don't need to get Firefox.

Firefox has been oddly freezing lately. Anyone else have that problem? I had to switch to Chrome because it got really annoying.

I use Chrome now...barely use Firefox any more. I also occasionally use Opera which is surprisingly pretty decent.

Everyone always forgets to mention Opera...
And lynx, apparently. :p
I left that out specifically so someone else could mention it. ;)

Hm, I haven't had that issue at all. I have Chrome installed, but Firefox is still my primary browser; I'm too invested in Firefox's Quick Search function to switch to Chrome.

Prior to the release of Firefox (back in its Phoenix days), Opera was my primary browser. It really is a great option, and subsequent browsers have taken plenty of cues from Opera (tabbed browsing, for an obvious example).

I had the same thing after all those updates in recent weeks. Removing the mozilla/firefox folder with all settings solved the problem. Sure I had to set everything back and add all add-ons again, but FF didn't freeze since then.

What I miss about firefox is the ability to type control B and get the ubb code for bold. Chrome doesn't do this, which is really annoying. But the lags were ridiculous. Google searches blamed add ons, but I got the problem in firefox safe mode, so I have no idea what could be causing it.

Gul Re'jal, can you elaborate more on what you mean.

Sounds like Gul Re'jal removed the Firefox profile folder. That is a common way to fix odd issues with Firefox, usually caused by some file in the profile folder getting corrupted.

You can save your settings and bookmarks, though, if you create a new profile and transfer them over. I once did that because my profile had also become corrupted. I don't quite remember the details now but if you google it you should find detailed instructions.

Another Firefox user here. Works like a charm for me.

I used Firefox exclusively until I got my MacBook. Now I just use Safari.

At work I use Internet Explorer, and it makes me feel dirty.

Yeah, that's it. I didn't even know it was called that way. And being a Linux user, things are usually done differently on my system, hence my very general description.

Edit: Instead of removing, I suggest changing its name. It's safer, if case you need something from it later. And if it's useless, you can delete it later.

I saved (exported) my bookmarks and then imported them into the new profile. Didn't want to do that with the settings, because I wasn't sure I wouldn't copy whatever was causing the problem.

Hey, a fellow Linux user. :) What distro do you use?
