a question about (but not with) spoilers

Question:

If and when the novel is put on the shelves prior to release of the movie, will you read it.. or skim it to find out certain things?

Unfortunately I'm an absolute spoilsport... so far, I've ruined almost every movie for myself (and for myself only, 'pon my honour) by reading the novelizations beforehand (sometimes, equally unfortunately, I'm actually disappointed when I see the movie because it looked so much better in my head).

As has already been reported the novel will not be released before the movie's premiere. So it's not an issue.

But even if it did, I would not read or skim it. I already feel I know more than I should about what happens in the movie.

No. To my mind, it's putting the cart before the horse. I'm sure that Foster will include many amusing fillips and clever expansions and thoughtful explanations and other bits I'll like, and if I read the novelization first, part of me would be foolishly disappointed to find that those bits are not in the film...

I wish I could say I would wait till after I saw the movie but I'd probably read the shit out of it.

This has got me thinking.

Here is how my spoilage/non spoilage happened on the last 10 movies:

ST:TMP - No spoilage as I was only 9 when it came out. Although I did keep seeing clips of the "Fireeeeee, phooooo-tooonnnnnn torrrr-peeeee-dooooosss!" scene on TV.

ST II - I think I read rumours of Spock dying before it came out. I must have been 11. I saw it in a big cinema in Dublin. Loved it.

ST III - Total Spoilage! Read the novel when I was 13. Stayed up late to read (with increasing disbelief) that Kirk was going to blow up the Enterprise. I was eventually surprised to discover all the David/Saavik stuff was not in the movie.

ST IV - Total Spoilage! Read the novel when I was 15 or 16.

ST V - No Spoilage. Didn't care about the movie as I was 18.

ST IV - No Spoilage. Saw it in the cinema. Loved it.

Generations - =Sigh= Spoilage. Read a detailed plot description I got on an FTP site in the summer of 1994. "Are they really making this movie?" I wondered. Yeah, they did.

Since then I have avoided spoilers and reading the novels. It's better that way. For example there was a moment near the end of First Contact where I thought they might actually blow up the Enterprise-E. Seriously!

Same thing happened to me waaaay back when I read his novelization of Star Wars: A New Hope (yes, it was still called The Star Wars in its first print and, yes, it says that George Lucas himself is the author)...

So far the only novel I read before seeing the film was TMP - I'm not sure whether that was a mistake or not, but I would do my utmost to ensure I didn't read the new film's novel first.
