A part of me hopes Watchmen fails

I'm most likely going to see it opening night, but I'm scared to death about it lol... it looks good so far, but it's hard to tell much more than that.

It looks wonderful, and I'm looking forward wholeheartedly to it.

"Baffling and confusing" audiences certainly isn't good for a studio's bottom line, but it certainly isn't anathema for a filmmaker of vision and ambition. The crucial questions of quality don't hang on that alone, one way or the other.

On one hand, this movie has been hyped up to the level of Episode I and it's driving me nuts, because I don't think it's worthy of the premature adulation. And the nasty side of me might enjoy hearing the loud, bitter laments of crushed fandom.
Isn't that why we're all here?

So...maybe I'll end up seeing Race to Witch Mountain instead. Like I give a fuck what happens to that flick.
You win either way. Carla Gugino is in Race To Witch Mountain too. :techman:

This movie is being promoted horribly wrong. They are giving the impression to the non comic audience that it is all action and explosions. Perhaps that is what the movie has turning into and if so will really be disapointing for fans of the novel. If it does follow the GN very closely then I believe the general audience will walk out of the theater going.. huh??? Yes I know about the ending and thats already put me on guard about the rest of the movie.

Yeah I have a feeling no matter how good the movie might be, the general audience is still going to be COMPLETELY bewildered by it.

The Dark Knight dealt with some pretty serious and adult themes too, but it was still ultimately a Batman vs Joker movie, that was set in a very familiar world. Watchmen has a bunch of unfamiliar characters in an unfamiliar 1980s setting, and most of the story is people standing around talking.

Pretty much everyone I follow on Twitter has seen the film and while they're tight lipped about details, they all seem to have greatly enjoyed it... The next week and a half is going to feel so long.

I'm anxious to see how the film does at the box office.

Question: would any of you recommend the graphic novel on which the film is based? I usually wouldn't bother, but I've been hearing things like "It's the greatest graphic novel of all time!" Is this hyperbole?

Yes. V for Vendetta is better.

Should I read it?

If the movie is faithful, that shouldn't be necessary.

This makes no sense. Not the bit about "V for Vendetta" (I don't agree, but its a fine book, so whatever) but why not read "Watchmen" regardless of the movie. Its an excellent read. Choosing what to read shouldn't really be about what's "necessary".

I have read V for Vendetta. Not Moore's best work.:shifty:

I have this funny feeling it's going to flop. Not sure why - I love the cast - I just think it won't be something the general public will relate to. Kind of the opposite of the Iron Man phenomenon, where an obscure character nobody outside of comics fandom had heard much about, succeeded anyway because the actor and the story made it relatable.
