A Night in Sickbay

seigezunt

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Just watched this for the first time. Don't quite get its bad reputation. I quite enjoyed it. But then I like Phlox.

I've always been ambivalent about Phlox. He's better when the writers weren't trying too hard to make him wacky.

I like the rather serious Phlox more than the Phlox who dominates a scene with "LOOK HOW WACKY I AM. WEEE WEEE WEEEE WEEE."

Oh, and this is the episode that cemented my opinion that Archer is a mega-weenie.

I also liked ANIS. I thought it was amusing and it did a nice job of what it intended to do: make the captain of the Enterprise a flawed human who in the end can admit, despite his hubris, he's wrong. I think one of the funniest scenes of Enterprise is the treadmill scene.

A Night in Shitbay sucked because it made the captain of Earth's first warp 5 ship and one of the Federation's founding fathers look irresponsible, inconsiderate, incompetent and immature.

I didn't like this episode because Archer was turned into the anti-Kirk.

He wouldn't do whatever was necessary to ensure the safety of his ship and crew.

I do agree, that Treadmill T'Pol ripping Archer a new one was the best scene in the episode.

I also liked this episode. It certainly isn't the best episode ever, but I've seen plenty of worse ones.

I liked how this episode went out of its way to show that Archer was a flawed Human. Just because he's one of the founding fathers of the Federation doesn't mean that he's a god. Just imagine how flawed someone like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, or Benjamin Franklin would seem to us if we actually met them.

The episode was a fun romp. I don't really understand the hostility for it, but then I don't understand most of the hostility toward ENT as a whole. Given the hostility leveled at the current film, I have just concluded that "fans" just hate any attempt to do anything new.

I thoroughly enjoyed Phlox and learning more about Denobulans. Great stuff.

Archer was a total embarrassment.

The Phlox contribution outweighs Archer for me though, it's easy just to cringe at Archer and study the beakers and vials lining Phlox's shelves until he's shut up finally.

Phlox was the only thing good in it. Archer sawing logs in his bizarre getup was kind of amusing, but the rest pretty much stunk.

It was an okay ep.

I think the problem was that the marketers were hypin' up the "hot" scene between Archer and T'Pol.

In the ep, it's just an awkward dream on Archer's part.

"Tiltiated" fans, therefore, were HUGELY disappointed.

Well, yeah, he's supposed to have foibles.

He isn't Kirk. ;-)
He could have foibles. He didn't even have to be Kirk. He didn't even have to be a poor imitation of Kirk.

I just wanted a captain who DESERVED the loyalty he got from his crew because they could count on him to look out for them.

I actually identified with Archer, and his beef with the aliens.

He had to apologize to them for...eating in front of them...on HIS ship.

He was right--that's GROVELING.

Actually, Travis apologized for humans' habit of eating in front of others.

Archer had to apologize for letting his dog piss on a sacred tree. And frankly, it was pretty idiotic of him to take Porthos on a landing party to a planet populated by such easily offended aliens, with or without a canine genome.

I am the lucky parent of a wonderful dog who accompanies us on outings whenever possible, because it makes him happy to be with us. I have been sleep-deprived to the point where my temper is short, my patience is nil, and everything I say seems to come out wrong. I have suffered the agonizing worry of not knowing whether my beloved pet will die from an illness. And I have experienced the incredible frustration of having to deal with idiots who have something I need, but who are so self-absorbed that they don't give a flying fig about concerns that are important to me and mine.

I "get" Archer in this episode. I enjoy the way the story is told -- the humor, the drama about Porthos, the sheer surreality of Archer's waking nightmare. Phlox is a winning combination of goofiness and compassion, as usual. And unlike in countless movies and TV shows, the dog doesn't die! So it gets a :techman: from me.

HR, I really enjoyed reading your response.

I thought this was insightful.

I also think television is supposed to be bigger (more dramatic) than life. If it's just life it's more like a reality show without any weirdos or truly talented folks.

So just because the aliens have a different culture then humans they are "stupid" ?

Didn't Porthos Pee on a sacred tree? Take your dog into a mosque/church/temple and have it take a wizz and see what happens on earth.

This episode to me showed how downright moronic Archer is. He took Porthos down (prob unleashed) to the alien planet of a people who where horrified to see humans EAT in public and didn't see anything wrong with it.
Just taking a dog into deep space was IMHO cruel - its no different then a dog going onboard a submarine.

Archer could of been a better man and apologized at the start and saved all the tantrums that made him look like an incompetant boob (pun intended).

We are an objective third-party. I think HR was indicating from Archer's perspective, they were stupid.

He could've, but that wasn't the point of the show. The point of the show is that the Enterprise's captain is human, normal and makes mistakes. (We all do.) Worse, we sometimes make mistakes and insist we haven't because we're unable to be objective. We also sometimes make mistakes and our pride refuses to allow us to apologize. Archer, like most heroes, has more pride than your typical flawed human.

He did apologize in the end, realizing he was a bit petulant. He also gained a better understanding and appreciation of an aliens' point of view ... something I think we see when he makes other decisions in season 2, like in Cogenitor.

I love animals, but I agree with this. I think Archer was given a dog to seem even more human and normal.
