A New Setting For a Star Trek Series

How about ship that has earned the nickname "Last Chance"? Basically, it's a rehab ship for those whose careers are on the way out and this is literally their last chance to redeem themselves, or who are returning to duty after something traumatic, or even people who are simply put there because there's nowhere else for them to fit in?

You could have a guy who's been the lone occupant of a relay station for years and now has to adjust to real people instead of just voices over the channels all the time. An ex-captain who has been demoted having a hard time being under the authority of a lieutenant JG. The survivor of an accident with inner and outer scars, maybe even a missing body part. A woman who was assaulted by her last commanding officer and is trying to heal and trust again. A captain with survivor's guilt. A formerly insane person who still doubts themselves and faces the doubts of others. A member of a race who faces daily prejudice and persecution.

Any number of imperfect, broken individuals.

You can be imperfect and not be broken. The above just seems like it is trying too hard to be dark and edgy. Not to mention it kinda spits in the face of Roddenberry's thoughts on humanity getting better. Not perfect, but better.

The original Star Trek really did get it right much of the time. The characters were interesting but weren't "broken".

It wouldn't be dark, but there would be lots of interpersonal conflict and internal grappling with issues. It would show that there is still hope, no matter what you've been through, to make a new start.

We're just on different pages on what Star Trek should be.

Yeah, well, I still think it could work.

I kind of wonder what it would look like when Starfleet is present, but decidedly not in the driver's seat on some civilian post. The civilian leader constantly having to remind the Starfleet contingent/detachment, "You're not in charge here, I am, and as long as you're posted here you answer to me."

Make it about Klingons involved in a war against the Romulans. Set it in TOS or TMP era. We could learn about both races, and probably learn to like/hate both.
