A new B5 series on the horizon?

There's the ongoing problem that every new production that shows it as a bustling free port down the line makes the fact that it had become a quiet backwater in '81 a bit less believable, but who cares?
I dunno, I thought The Lost Tales did a pretty good job of not showing it as bustling. ;)

Obviously, everyone was on the dozen-odd capital ships orbiting the station waiting for the funny smell to go away. :p

But the Big Story JMS had to tell with the universe is done.
Let him come up with another big story. Or, if he doesn't have another big story, then why is there noise about him doing something? He needs to have a story to tell, or else there's no point to any of this.

I hope the noise doesn't turn out to be something like him licensing the rights to a video game. :wtf:
And as for the telepath war, that was supposed to be before Crusade. Give Boxlietner some Just For Men, and it'll be fine.

Or recast the role. Recast all the roles. If Spock can be successful recast, anyone can. There are plenty of talented actors out there who'd love a chance to prove themselves.

Hate reboots and remakes and prefer them to always build on what was before. Ok with jumping a ahead and filling in the gaps later (like TNG).

It's a remake.

Only if that's a contraction of 'It was'. 'Cause it's nothing, now.

Oh I don't know, a "was-going-to-have-been" is still something. At least until someone reads an offical synopsis and the wave function collapses. But let's not wate time conjugating temporal verbs in the past and possible never tense...

Seriously though, the news from Koenig that JMS is after getting the rights to B5 is interesting (if accurate.) It's been my understanding that Joe has always retained the movie rights while WB basically owns everything else. If they're willing to sell them back to him then it's possible he's looking to set up shop at another studio.

On the other hand it might be a simple misunderstanding on Walter's part and what JMS was actually talking about was acquiring the B5 licence, in which case it was probably to do with this remake that almost was.

[EDIT]

According to this article, JMS says:
“Walter [Koenig] misspoke. I am not in negotiations with WB to develop more Babylon 5.”
http://spinoff.comicbookresources.c...ski-swats-down-rumor-about-babylon-5-revival/

^ So it is the latter case. I suspected as much.

Not sure how I like the way the article slants the story to make it almost look like Koenig is intentionally getting peoples hopes up. It's just a case of being a few weeks out of date. I doubt the man keeps as close a watch on JMS's facebook posts as some of us do...probably not at all.

It sounds like whatever was in the works has totally been dropped or collapsed now as we talked about earlier on in the thread. As I pointed out and Kegg recently stated I still don't think a reboot of his original story would have been interesting to go if that was what he was planning to do with this. He told his story, and did so brilliantly. If there is nothing else that he has left that he can tell then the franchise should simply be left at it is.

The "Going after Rights" part, came from another source as well (JMS Facebook post, I believe), prior to Walter Koenig, so, I think that's probably still on the table, but, again, it will take a year or more of negotiation for him to get them.

Jan, I understand the deal for a reboot, is now dead, but, do you think if JMS does obtain the Rights, he might go back to that idea, or would he go another direction, if the Universe was his 100% to do what he wanted with?

^ IIRC part of the reboot deal had to do with the network thingy. I think the two were intertwined with one another and that is why the deal collapsed but yeah Jan can clear that up again.

Everything I've seen regarding the 'getting the rights' has all stemmed from Walter's comments at a convention last weekend. It was tweeted almost as he said it.

I have no idea whatsoever. I'd love to see what he'd do with the opportunity but we'd have to keep in mind the reality that even if he had the rights, all he'd be able to do is whatever some studio was willing to *buy*. But it would open up a lot of possibilities, I think.

ETA: What JMS said on FB was that he was in informal talks with WB but that nothing was likely to come of it for a year or so. That's why I was so certain that Walter got it wrong. Informal talks don't result in anything but formal talks, if one is very lucky.

Yea, the deal was going to be "A new distribution stream for a reboot". The Rights negotiation, appears to have started, since the deal that was made between JMS and WB fell apart because of the money people.

He told WB, since we can't do that (The Reboot they agreed to), how about "This"? I believe "This" is selling him the Rights.

Bah no more reboot crap...
Make something new in that Verse!!!
Plenty of stuff to use!

I would have loved to see Crusade to its end....but that is not going to happend!

This thread title just makes me laugh. I guess it will be coming out around the same time as that new series of Firefly and Serenity 2 as well, huh? Oh and Ripper as well

In the case of Firefly, at least that show's creator has done or is doing something successful and unrelated to that particular show. That will give Whedon far more leverage if he did try revisiting the universe in the future.

With JMS, it feels like he has blown any chances he has had to revive B5 or expand that universe. Ten years ago, I would have been salivating at the thought of seeing more B5. Now, I hate to say it, but I could care less.

Has anyone even liked any of the stuff he's done post-B5 universe? I know most people don't seem to have been real thrilled with any of his comic book stuff.
