A missed opportunity to bridge Seasons 2 and 3

"Samartan Snare" should have aired as the last episode of season 2 but at the end the surprise surgeon is not Pulaski but Beverly Crusher, leading in to Crusher rejoining the crew.

The producers ending season 2 probably didn't actually know Pulaski would definitely be leaving, let alone that Crusher would be returning but I think it would have been really cool if they had. How do you think the fans would have reacted to that twist and finale/cliffhanger?

They knew that Pulaski was leaving early on, since Diana Muldaur didn't enjoy working on the show and from the very start didn't commit to any long-term appearances (hence why in every episode she's billed under "Special Apperance by")

But yeah Gate McFadden returning was not something they knew about right away. I still think that Dr.Selar might have been created with her being a possible candidate to replace Pulaski in season 3.
