A May-December Romance

Delta1

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
What, exactly, will be going on between December and May? By most accounts, the film was on track to be done by December, it will be pretty much done by December, but it's not going to be released until May.

Will they use the extra five months to polish the film? It's possible, but there's some things standing in the way.

* The production was budgeted assuming a December release, and JJ has undoubtedly been spending money so that it'll run out in December. When the money runs out, post-production stops. Can they rekajigger the budget now to spread post-production out over January through April? They'd be spread pretty thin, but they might be able to benefit from more time for discussion and decision-making.

* The contracts signed for personnel and facilities assumed a December release. If post-production extends into 2009, they may well lose some of these things. Their visual effects team might be scheduled to start work on some other movie, meaning there'd be a last-minute change in VFX artists. They might lose their spot at the recording studio, or their preferred orchestra. Actors might not be able to return for ADR.

On the other hand, they might just finish the film and lock it up somewhere. There's a few issues with that, too.

* Ninjas will try to steal it and post a torrent.

And finally, there's the issue of what the licensees are going to be doing.

* Computer games are typically rushed, so if the budget and other constraints allow, they can use this extra time to implement new features or at least quash bugs. It would be nice to get a game that's playable out-of-the-box.

* Someone at Pocket Books and whoever owns the comic license now (seems to change every year) will have to sit on the story for a few more months. Hopefully, they can use this extra time to bring their adaptations into closer accord with the final film.

* Playmates might just release some of their toys for Christmas. Expect to see minor characters elevated to legendary chase figure status, like Boba Fett of old. They could use the extra time to fine-tune their molds, paint jobs, and packaging--again, if the budget allows.

The extra four and a half months gives everyone plenty of time to polish things and make every part of the film and merchandising finished and coherent. But, will they actually make use of them?

Why would they want to?

The film will almost surely be finished along the original schedule, and then sit on the shelf for five months. Why is this hard to accept?

Yeah this thing's going to be done when it was originally supposed to be done and it's going to sit around until May. If for no other reason than that everyone working on it probably has other stuff they're signed up to do after Trek. Can't arbitrarily extend post production if the film doesn't need it just because you ostensibly have the time.

I do not "accept," as fact, fan theories about how the production of a movie will play out over the next 15 months. Theories are tentative and subject to revision. A few days ago, everyone accepted that the film would be released on the 25th of December. A few days ago, Paramount was telling everyone the film would be released on the 25th of December. Things change, and it's perfectly reasonable for one to speculate not only whether but also how and why such changes might occur. I hope this is the last time I have to defend my curiosity and my skepticism.

As to why they would want to use the additional five months to work on the film, when is the last time a major sci-fi/fantasy film didn't undergo at least some work after its initial theatrical release? And once you've thought of that film, couldn't it have benefited from a few more months' work? Whether the film is locked in December or April, whether or not JJ Abrams declares it perfect and complete, I can pretty much guarantee it could benefit from some additional work and odds are fair that it'll be tinkered with before it's committed to DVD.

Many films undergo additional work after their theatrical release, even those that are not released as special editions, so it is not infeasible that Trek08 could be touched up in the December-May period. In fact, they might have planned to do some pre-DVD work in this period, which could end up on the big screen instead.

Who knows why it's happening...but if it can't be released during the Christmas season I'd just assume them wait until summer for release. I think the film will be more successful that way. :)

I wouldn't be surprised if post-production is extended a bit. Just tightening up the edits a bit doesn't require a large staff.

Let's ignore, for the moment, "popular conceptions" about moviegoing, and just look at what each of you, PERSONALLY, do when going to movies.

Ya see, I've never quite "gotten" the whole idea of there being certain times when you "should" or "shouldn't" release flicks. It strikes me as the sort of "conventional wisdom" that led people to believe that the Earth was flat for centuries, after they'd already figured out it was round long before.

SO... another unscientific "TrekBBS Poll:"

People, especially kids, have more free-time in the summer. Watching movies requires free-time.
