Please refrain from mentioning Dr. Kaz from the relaunch novels. This idea concerns a Trill on Voyager during the show's run.
This is an idea for an OC that I'm pondering, but I want to keep things relatively canon-friendly. Here's the gist:
Among Voyager's original Starfleet crew is a joined Trill, who holds the rank of lieutenant. He is fatally injured on the trip over, just barely outliving Stadi and Commander I-Brace-For-Nobody by a few hours. While the main characters go off on their adventures in "Caretaker," the injured Maquis from Chakotay's ship are brought onto Voyager to be treated by the EMH. One Maquis gunner happens to be an unjoined Trill--she left the homeworld and settled on a colony due to the unfair treatment of unjoined Trill back home. But she takes pity on the dying Starfleet Trill, and saves his symbiont by joining to it.
Now the lowly gunner suddenly has Starfleet training and a familiarity with the U.S.S. Voyager, literally overnight. She is part of the reason that the Maquis integrate into the Starfleet crew so smoothly--seeing one of their own literally blend with Starfleet overnight makes a difference. She's still their old war buddy, but now she's snipping at her friends for their scuffed boots and wrinkled uniforms.
After "Parallax," she, like Chakotay and B'Elanna, is granted a provisional rank, based on past experience, that some of the original Starfleeters might find dubious. She's now in charge of inspecting Voyager's weapons, and helping Tuvok and Lt. Baxter keep all the security goons ship-shaped. She may also be involved with why Voyager never runs out of torpedoes, though I think Seven of Nine bringing in Borg technology would really have more to do with that.
Her main stake in this journey is getting back to Trill in time for the next host, with the symbiont in tact.
Come "Hunters," this Trill finds herself facing two piles of letters from two different families. The Trill Symbiosis Commission is also not thrilled to learn that an outlaw has been granted a symbiont.
But why didn't we see a Trill onscreen? Since Symbionts are both valuable and vulnerable, she is generally kept out of the action, and her main job is below decks. Her hair also might cover most of her spots when she's out and about. Also, one might ask why we barely ever saw any of the non-Human crewmembers in the background.
Thoughts?
