See, I could see the Doctor (specifically, the tenth Doctor) taking Princess Mary on as a reclamation project. Plus, she changes over the course of the series; until Eustace Chapuys dies, the fourth season Mary is pretty mellow religiously. Not quite historical, but I'd love for Sarah Bolger's Princess Mary from The Tudors to travel in the TARDIS.
That would definitely be fun, but I don't see her 16th century X-TREME CATHOLICISM!™ meshing well with the Doctor for very long.
But, if it was someone like DB Cooper or Amelia Earhardt, who just disappeared one day, that mystery is still there. They may have been killed by Daleks, or decided to stay in 25th Century Earth...
I suppose that would work, but Earhart brings back bad Voyager memories. Let's steer clear of that.

What if she wore the same pants as in Night at the Museum? I'd have to give a thumbs up...

The problem with using an historical character is that you know how his story arc is going to end. If Abe Lincoln joins the TARDIS crew you pretty much know that he's not going to go down fighting the Daleks.

If they're going to keep pandering to Americans (which I'm all for, by the way), I would love a story where the Doctor either meets or turns out to be D.B. Cooper.
I'm not sure that most Americans are that familiar with Cooper.

San Jose, CA has (Or at least used to have) a Dance club called DB Coopers, with a guy parachuting from the ceiling and money falling out of a bag.I'm not sure that most Americans are that familiar with Cooper.
Except maybe for regular viewers of Prison Break.![]()
