'A Game of Thrones' cast begins to roll in. Ned is cast!

"Post-traumatic contrarian tomboy sociopath" is generally not an easy role to cast with a pre-pubescent girl.

It will be tricky indeed.

If all of GRRM's works gets picked up for a series by HBO, a prominent character in the 2nd work "A Clash of Kings" is Ser Davos Seaworth, the Onion Knight. Colm Meaney would be great for this part. Ser Davos seems to be the Everyman of ASOFAI.

Over at Westeros.org, I am apparently the hardcore don't-change-anything-if-you-can-avoid-it fanboy. It is an odd role to find oneself in.

I'm looking forward to see the adaptation since that series is one of my favorite fantasy series. I may have to get HBO.

So will it take 20 seasons to tell the whole saga?
Seven seasons at most. The book series will run for seven books, and the plan is for each season to adapt at least one book (some of the books may be collapsed into one season, which would of course cut down the overall number of seasons - the casting notes suggest that a rumor that the fourth and fifth books may be collapsed into a single season may well be true).

I'm really, really bored today.

Six more roles have been cast according to George R.R. Martin, although he's not at liberty to divulge them. They should be announced pretty soon. Two of the roles are Jaime Lannister and Theon Greyjoy, while at least three are female characters (one may be Dany if the sixth role cast is also a female character, bringing it to a total of four female characters out of the six).

Jennifer Ehle is a great choice to play Catelyn. :techman:

A bunch of cast announcements have been made:

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Jaime Lannister
Tamzin Merchant as Daenerys Targaryen
Richard Madden as Robb Stark
Iain Glen as Ser Jorah Mormont
Alfie Allen as Theon Greyjoy
Sophie Turner as Sansa Stark
Maisie Williams as Arya Stark

Here are some of the characters as depicted in the Dabel Brothers A Song of Ice and Fire calendar:

Eddard "Ned" Stark (Sean Bean)
Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau)
Jon Snow (Kit Harington)
Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner)

Here are some images from GRRM's blog. BTW, the Sophie Turner on IMDb isn't the same one. She and Maizie Williams are complete newcomers and they look the part judging by the tiny, tiny pics.

Ah, I see. The story in the The Hollywood Reporter listed Doctor Who as a credit for the Sophie Turner who's been cast, and since it was only one of two credits on that Sophie Turner's IMDB page I thought she was the appropriate young actress. But that's obviously not the case.
