A Flaky Boss & Baseball

Because the job-market is so open and easy right now?

You know, people do have jobs they don't like but have to have them to pay bills and maintain a lifestyle they want especially if they're trained/educated in a field that's hard to get into right now (as Flux is.)

He may not like his job but it's one he needs to have to support himself and his spouse. And him asking for days off, days off he's entitled to per his vacation time, shouldn't be held against him.

Expecting them when he wants them, on short notice, when his absences have already been noted, and called to his attention is a problem. Especially when someone feels entitled to it without sufficient notice is an issue.

Sick Time and Vacation time are part of his compensation - it's not a favor that the company is doing for him.

Actually, yes it is. They are not required to give it to him, and when they do they are required to give adequate notice. And from what he did say, his absences have been noticed to the point that it was brought up. I feel that if he gave adequate notice, then the whole situation would have been an issue, or such a big issue.

Actually you are probably wrong; vacation and sick time are negotiated in most contracts. It's called a benefits package.

I get four weeks of vacation and three PTO days a year. I'm allowed to take them at any time I want to and while advance notice is preferred it is not required especially in the case of the PTO days as they're there for those "last minute emergencies" or sick days.

Where I work, we have a cap of 400 hours on Vacation Leave, which is accrued at different rates based on an employee's seniority. For instance, right now I'm entitled to 162 hours per year, or about 20 vacation days. This is in addition to 8 hours of Employee Birthday Leave and 14 company holidays. If the employee has accumulated more than 400 hours, then he/she has to take mandatory time off or the hours will be cashed out (higher taxes).

Sick Leave, however, is the same for everyone in the company regardless of status, title, or seniority. It's accrued at the rate of 4 hours per pay period (biweekly), and there is no cap on how much an employee can accrue. However, if for any medical reason, the employee is out on extended medical leave and has exhausted his Sick Leave, he can still use whatever Vacation hours he has left.

Neither Vacation nor Sick Leave expires at the end of the calendar year, and the hours are always carried over to the next year.

I guess I'm lucky to have plenty of leave time available, but I make sure I give my boss advanced notice to take some time off (well, most of the time anyway).

I'd just like to clarify something: when I said that I'm the only one that does my job, I didnt mean it to be arrogant. I simply am the only person in my area with my specific job. We have 15 stores in the district with 3 people in my position in the district including myself...you can do the math. And I don't particularly enjoy it...I've already been called twice while I've been at this commercial shoot.

If you've got a skill that not many can do, or you can do better, more power to you! That's the foundation for a successful career.

This isn't a McDonald's job we're talking about. Annual and sick leave are part of the deal.

Yeah, when considering a new job Vacation is part of my pay as far as I am concerned. My income is not just what I take home every month. Though I guess that would be foreign concept to a burger flipper.

I haven't flipped burgers in 20 years... however every job I've had since then did include vacation and PTO. And if I wanted to take a vacation I was required to give notice, unless I used a PTO which was for things that would come up without warning. I'm commenting on the fact that he said he's been taking days off, about 2 per month. Which can be considered excessive, in some places unreliable. He basically comes across as saying if I say I need/want it then they have to give it to me. Well the real world doesn't work that way. If I'm right on what he does at work, it's nothing something that a few can do. Sales calls, call backs, etc... sales job.

I have had people who sound like (not bothering to look up his username) work for me. They take days off, or partial days then get worked up when I've denied them days (vacation) off on short notice because they were needed, or others had already requested the same time off in advance. Where he works does not revolve around him, his work and days off revolve around what is best for the company.

I forgot to mention one more thing ...

At the time of an employee's retirement, all unused Sick Leave hours will be doubled and added to his/her number of years of service in the company. So let's say I was getting ready to retire this month with 20 years of service and had accumulated 1,040 hours of SL (which is about six months' worth).

1,040 SL Hours x 2 = 2,080 Work Hours (which is equivalent to one additional year of service to my credit)

This is why a lot of older employees refuse to use their Sick Leave for routine medical/dental appointments and use Vacation hours instead.
