A fascinating project..IDW "reimagines" TOS episodes, writing by Orci

I'll be getting these. And no, my generation has not forgotten about Star Trek and we're well aware that Star Trek 2 is on the way. But comics in general, I would say, are not that big with my generation.

The downfall for comics began with the abandonment of the newsstand. Once it stopped being a part of everyday experience (i.e., there they are on the magazine rack at the sueprmarket, can I have one, mom, please?) and you had to start tracking them down in specialty shops, they got consigned to "niche market" status, with old coots like me haranguing kids about the good old days when we'd hang out at the comic book rack at Safeway catching up on the latest issues while our mothers would do the grocery shopping. And with a cover price of only fifteen cents, we might've even been able to pick up a few issues with our own money.

Nowadays, with the average cover price up around three bucks, it better be a damn good story to justify picking it up.

Something about Gary Mitchell still looking like Gary Lockwood is really rubbing me the wrong way.

From what I've seen of Trek from IDW if it isn't written by John Byrne then it isn't worth bothering with.

This.

I'd love to see more Star Trek by John Byrne.

When you finally get down to the actual likely purchasers of this thing, suddenly that percentage of fans who despise JJTrek isn't so small. Might even be a majority at that stage.

Nonsense. The idea that real TOS fans "despise" the reboot and that only clueless newbies like it is a tired myth that needs to be put out to pasture.

A handful of viewers obviously have the issues with the new movie, but (despite what they often seem to think) they do NOT speak for the rest of us long-time Trekkies--and I really wish they would stop pretending otherwise.

You don't like the reboot? Fine. But stop asserting that the "real fans," the "hardcore" fans, the "core audience", or whatever all agree with you.

(I just spend the last three months writing 82,000 words of TOS. I'll put my "hardcore fan" credentials up againt anybody! :))

And, oh, just to stay OT: This sounds like a fun experiment. I'll have to check out the comics.

I'm no fan of the new movie, particularly some of the charactarizations. However, Trek is a big tent and can accomodate many. For some TOS is the only true Trek. For others, TOS is dated and silly and they prefer the darker tone of DS9. There's any number of ways to enjoy the show.

I won't be watching the sequel movie but that doesn't mean I don't want them to make it or don't want others to watch it. To each his own.

^Now, that's a refreshing point of view.

Well, if they made him look like some random person, no one's going to realise that it's meant to be Gary Mitchell on the cover. They'd say the artist was hopeless at getting actor's likenesses correct.

I'm one of those fans who had issues with ST09 (not quite enough to say that I despise it or won't see the sequel) and I'm part of the "younger" generation of fans at 24, but this project seems... intriguing. I'm curious to see the approach taken.

However, these actors are already the second ones to play their respective characters. If one of them chooses not to return, there's no reason the role couldn't be recast yet again.

Exactly.

I managed to watch the entirety of "Captain America: The First Avenger" the other night not actually realising ('til the credits) that it was Chris Evans in the title role. Knowing each of these Marvel movies are building towards a huge team-up in "The Avengers" - and returning the Hulk, Thor, Iron Man and Nick Fury characters from all the previous films, I began wondering to myself if the "Fantastic Four" might show up in cameo, as they often did in the comics. Then, of course, I realised that Chris Evans had played Johhny Storm in the two FF films. But the Marvel films are onto their third Bruce Banner now, anyway.

Recasting in ST can be annoying at first, but at least we don't get a daytime soapie voiceover, "Due to illness, in today's episode of 'Days of Our Lives', the part of Marlena is being played by..."

Actually, that's exactly what seems to be the case, considering the faces on this cover are nothing more than mere photoshops of publicity photos or film stills. Rather unimaginative, if you ask me.

There's no chance of that, since the film rights to the Fantastic Four are held by 20th Century Fox. That's also the reason why the X-Men (Fox), Daredevil (Fox), Spider-Man (Sony), and Ghost Rider (Sony/Columbia) will never show up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Well, at least not unless their license-holders let them lie fallow long enough for the rights to revert back to Marvel. But the other studios don't want to let that happen, which is why there are sequels or reboots to all of those projects in development or production. (Although Marvel has recently gotten back the movie rights to Blade and the Punisher.)

And I knew that Cap was played by the same guy who played Johnny Storm, but I found him almost unrecognizable. Same with Chris Hemsworth -- I knew he was playing Thor, but Thor didn't look a thing like George Kirk to me.
