A fascinating project..IDW "reimagines" TOS episodes, writing by Orci

Re: A fascinating project..IDW "reimagines" TOS episodes, writing by O

Tie-ins have no forward traction. In the '70s most comics were one-shots, except for the occassional multi-parter. Continuing storylines are the norm now. I prefer that type of format instead of one-and-done. Not that this system is always perfect. I like six-parters to actually have six issues worth of story in them instead of two.

I could say that's biased based on the fact that I started reading comics in 1988 but it boils down to something a little more basic: wanting to know what happens next, and not knowing, is what keeps me coming back.

Just an observation. I don't really care because I won't be reading these anyway.

Likewise.

Well... that killed some time. ;)

I actually love alternate versions of stories, like those alternate history books. So this sounds like a lot of fun. I am going to try to check it out.

It's an intriguing idea. People will read comic book adaptations of established stories and there were a lot of stories to choose from. I hope they don't try to fit each episode into a single issue that finishes with, 'Mr Sulu, target and destroy that ship/planet/spacestation/tribble/species/girl who rejected me'. However, I'd be up for the stories playing out differently because of the characters' different experiences.

One caveat is that I would like to see them make better use of the supporting cast and I'd like them to include characters like Yeoman Rand, Kevin Riley, Lt Kyle, and Nurse Chapel more regularly and acknowledge them as characters in their own right rather than just a bland speech bubble to elicit some exposition.

This direction says to me that they might already be moving this direction for fil XII. If doing it (reimagining the old) in one area (comics), it seems likely in another (movie).

I'd look into the comics, though. Maybe they will read through all our posts and fix the plotholes.

This was fun when it was called Star Wars: Infinities.

Difficult to see how they can reimagine "Amok Time" and "Journey to Babel" without Vulcan or Amanda.

That seems doubtful to me, since the two are aimed at different audiences and serve different goals. Tie-in comics are likely to draw in a much smaller and more fan-dominated audience than the movies would, and tie-ins would have to avoid significant alterations to the status quo between movies. Conversely, the movies need to appeal to a broader audience that isn't aware of or interested in the details of Trek continuity, and they need to tell big, worldshaking stories that are worthy of a summer blockbuster. So the factors and priorities shaping the two are rather different and they're unlikely to tell the same kind of story.

You can see a similar dynamic if you compare the first movie with the tie-in comics published around it. Things like Countdown and Spock: Reflections, as well as the later Nero, relied heavily on "continuity porn," knitting together familiar plot elements, characters, etc. from prior Trek continuity. They had to avoid spoiling or getting in the way of the new movie, so they instead drew heavily on pre-existing continuity elements. The movie itself, on the other hand, told a largely original story, one that was chosen specifically to be a story that had never been told onscreen (i.e. how the band got together). It drew on some familiar elements like the Kobayashi Maru and Spock's "Yesteryear" backstory, but ended up taking things in a rather different direction from what we've seen before (in some respects, at least).

Amok Time: Simpy bring T'Pring and Stonn to Spock. You'd have to cut out Vulcan and T'Pau, but you could probably still have the whole Kirk vs. Spock fight to the death.

Journey to Babel: Sarek comes to the Enterprise sporting a new human squeeze. Drama ensues.

Maybe we will get lucky and they will blow up the Nu enterprise in the comic book and on screen as well:rommie:

Re: A fascinating project..IDW "reimagines" TOS episodes, writing by O

Will the original series' writers get royalty payments for the use of their work? If not then I can think of at least one writer, from the edge of forever, who would be happy to remind them of their obligations.

That would be funny. But I'd hate to see what they'll do with "Journey to Babel" without Amanda.

Their premise is simple: the fans loved nuTrek movie, so they'll love nuTrek comic remakes of the episodes.

I'm sure we'll have a grand time discussing them without you! Can't wait.

I can imagine a tragic scenario...Vulcans accelerating pon far to establish genetic diversity and a new population...logical...the confrontation for Spock comes far too soon, and he is forced into the Amok Time situation on a different planet.

Journey...same thing, Spock can still have conflict with his father...if he is forced to work with him. Amanda's death might wind up becoming a sore point between them...

This was fun when it was called Star Wars: Infinities.

Which I loved the hell out of.

I haven't collected a monthly series since the late 80's when I collected West Coast Avengers, Transformers, GIJoe and Marvel Tales featuring Spider-Man, this might be enough to change that.

Re: A fascinating project..IDW "reimagines" TOS episodes, writing by O

Oh, this will sell dozens of copies.

Re: A fascinating project..IDW "reimagines" TOS episodes, writing by O

Let's face it, comics don't sell well anymore period. I don't really care as long as it can complete a certain run that will satisfy my imagination for parallel stories from the new universe.
