A city of 250,000 with no bookstore

Used book stores, and specialty bookstores catering to niche markets (e.g., Christian bookstores, comic book shops). That doesn't change the fact that once the B. Dalton's closes there will be no national chain bookstore in Laredo, a town of a quarter million people (plus all the people who might come across the border from Mexico to shop).
CNN isn't the only news outlet to have reported on this, either, but why let facts get in the way of a chance to slam the media?

I'd prefer to buy at the BN in town - it's close to my house, very clean and inviting, and it smells like Starbucks (because there's one in there). I like bookstores. I enjoy just walking around and looking. Problem is, it's too expensive to buy there. I can get just about anything in there way cheaper online at Amazon or half.com.
For example, I wanted a copy of the new Sibley Guide to Trees.
Price at my local BN: $40. Price at amazon: $25 - no decision necessary.
The selection is also relatively poor in a brick and mortar - my local BN has about half a shelf of the latest Star Trek novels, and sometimes doesn't have the newest ones. They're also thumbed through by other customers (I like my copies crisp, thank you very much).
And don't get me started on the cost of DVDs in BN's media section! Double, triple the online cost!

I guess it depends on what kind of stores you have nearby. I can't always find what I want at the local Chapters, but if I can it's so much nicer to be able to walk into the store and buy the book there.
I do order books online if I want the hardcover when the store only carries the paperback. But the whole issue of free shipping after $39 can mean I end up spending more money than I actually want or not being able to get it because I don't have enough.
