ER, you realise there was nothing wrong with the actual Titanic right, Wamdue? (conspiracy theories aside which claim it was actually her sister ship the Olympic) She was on her maiden freaking voyage! Condemed by bad luck, the elements and vanity (the need to break the Atlantic crossing time), she wasn't a doomed ship until she hit the ice berg.

yes I know, I made post about it but didnt post it.

I was not happy saying that the inability to cope with ice, was not a design fault, but yes had it not struck the ice the Titanic would not have sunk.

If I remember right, wasn't the design fault the fact that they never expected so many of the sections to take on water at once? Two or three ok, but more then that and they pull to boat down enough to spill into the next section? What they needed were ceilings for the sections.

Yeah, I wouldn't neccesarily call it a design fault as the fact they never expected what happened to happen, ie a rent that would rip through so many compartments at once, there came a point whereby the ship had taken on so much water that it tipped over into next compartment, then the next and so on.

Of course they might still have sunk if they'd hit slower, or head on rather than side on as they did, but they'd have probably sunk slower. Of course if they'd had enough lifeboats, if the lifeboats they had had all left fully laden, if the California hadn't misinterpreted their distress flares as celebratory fireworks...the story of the Titanic comes down to a lot of ifs, and its amazing how many seperate contrivences added togeather to kill 1500 people :(

I think someone's getting the Who ep mixed up with Starship Titanic, the Douglas Adams's game/book thing.

I can't read this whole thread, but I have to say it was a great story. My wife thought it was Smith's best, and I think I agree.

I recorded it, and only got around to watching it today. Fantastic. I loved it. The story may have had similarities to The Girl in the Fireplace; but I did not mind. Full of amusing, heartwarming, and sad moments. The best NuWho Xmas special to date. Oh, and the trailer for next season, whoa. Looks great, can't wait! :)
