A bunch of old people running around

The TOS crew had gotten old, but they had also written that into their stories. From TWOK's "Young. I feel young!" line all the way to TUC where the characters retire! They knew they were getting old, and they worked with it.

TNG ignored it and had Picard playing Superhero all the time.

I agree. As long as they had created coherent action filled happy stories, they would have succeeded way more than they did, no matter who the cast was.

I'm a young person and I didn't consider the TNG crew "old" whatever that means. Eg, someone can be old at any age either in appearance or attitude. Though granted the TOS crew were getting on by V but by that time they were legendary so their age contributed to their status.

Well just as 40 would have been very old 10,000 years ago, 60 is probably 40 in the TNG era. Also Picard is very fit, remember the episode where he's training for the espionage mission on Romulus? He mentions that he runs marathon lengths etc. Even when he was younger he set a record in star fleet for marathon running. He also practices fencing. In effect he would be comparable to that kung fu master in Kill Bill.

I've never bought all the "They are too old" crap. If the story is good, people will watch and enjoy it.

Yup. I was young when the original movies were coming out and never thought these people are too old. If you are entertained it won't matter.

Personally I think the problem is not necessarily the TNG cast's age, but that they might not have been doing age-appropriate stuff. I really think that TWOK got it right in that it acknowledged age and time moving on. Not only did it acknowledge it, it made it a theme. I would really have liked to have seen something similar for TNG. Scatter in some younger cast to balance things out and I think that would have worked well for me.

To me they (original cast of TNG) all looked too tired.
Troi looked liked she aged 20 years in the last TNG movie. Time for fresh blood.I like watching TNG / TOS on TV better and seeing them in their prime rather than on the big screen where you can see how much they have aged.

But that's just me.

I grew up with the original series movies. The fact that they were older was never an issue with me as a kid. All I knew is it was Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. I didn't care how they looked or what their ages were. I think the trend to only show kids young people in entertainment is a bad thing. What ever happened to having real adults to look up to?

Ya it never bothered me either. Seems there are alot of people who think once a person is older they should just play shuffleboard and take naps. As for me I loved seeing the characters played by the original actors for so long!

Good point. And now that I'm in my 40's myself, I actually enjoy seeing people my age on tv and film, rather than a load of kids I don't relate to. Which is why I wish they'd written something for the TNG crew that reflected their age and the issues they are facing. I suppose there is a bit of that in Nemesis with people moving on with their lives and Picard (and maybe Data) kind of looking their lost youths in the face.

Because they were older. ST TV shows have a 'look' which is basically a cast of good looking people doing exciting things every week. When they get past it, the big screen is a lot less forgiving than the small screen. This is why the new movie is so popular with non-Trek film goers; it's full of good looking young men doing dashing things.

Yeah... the only problem is that not everyone is interested in bunch of teenagers running the Federatiion flagship and Kirk leaking on his way from hangar...

Sorry but the necessity to appeal to 12-20 crowd is something that brings the new Trek down in my eyes.

Soon, everyone under 30 will have to go through Carousel on Lastday. Or run.

Welcome to the 23rd Century. There's only one catch...

I thought Generations did a pretty decent job with the age issue in some of the dialog. Two of my favorite lines were from Picard:

"You know, Counselor, recently I've become very much aware that there are fewer days ahead than there are behind. ...But I took comfort from the fact that ...the family would go on. But now there'll be no more Picards."

"Someone once told me that time is a predator that stalks us all our lives. I rather believe that time is a companion that goes with us on the journey, and reminds us to cherish every moment, ...because they'll never come again. ...What we leave behind is not as important as how we lived. ...After all, Number One, we're only mortal."

Excellent! I was thinking along those lines. It was Picard that was dealing with the issue of things he didn't do in his past and having some regrets. And then realizing that it would have been a different and maybe even boring life if he didn't.

Oh, good grief, I am so sick of this 'too old' crap. First off, the recent movies tanked at the box office because they sucked, not because of the age of the cast. And... you know what, nevermind. I was trying to form an intellectual response to this, but it's just so pathetic that we're even talking about it...

I'm not an ageist, but I think one of the problems with recent Trek films, in terms of lack of box office, were that they were about a bunch of old people. Fundamentally, young audiences don't want to see films about old people. They don't fit the action/adventure film mold.

This is pretty obviously true. Trek had become ridiculous in that regard.

Wrong.

The film series declined over time for a number of reasons. One is that some of the films weren't very good - but then, some of the earlier Trek films weren't very good either. They simply cost less to make and the audience was more patient.

Because the second reason is that people by and large were completely bored with Star Trek by the mid-1990s. Sorry, you can't generate the kind of box office required to carry increasingly expensive films completely out of the wallets of the hard-core.

Which brings up a third reason for the failure of Trek - the actors were too old. No one but hard-core Trek fans were interested in watching them huff and puff their way through "action" movies clad in Spandex.

These are the things I was talking about earlier in the thread when I said I wished that TNG had addressed these kind of issues more in its film. I like these lines, too. And, "Time is a fire in which we burn." A bit dramatic, but that's okay by me.

Uh guys, wasn't the point of Insurrection about growing old and lost youth, wasn't that the underlining plot with the Eternal Youth Planet? Even though the movie was poorly executed and unintetionally depicted the native inhabitants of the Eternal Youth Planet more repulsive than the supposed antagonists.

And unlike the trim, dashing Kirk from TOS, Picard was already a balding, middle aged man throughout TNG's run way back in the late 80s and early/mid 90s.

You know, I recently looked at a still frame from "Star Trek VI" and thought the same way.... Sort of laughing at how old everyone was.

But last time I watched the film, I really didn't notice it.

I think people seem to forget that the characters don't stay the same age. They get old too.
