...DS9's Captain Benjamin Sisko.

Whether it is Star Trek's first African American captain or President David Palmer from "24," positive portrayals of African American characters in the media have had an influence in the perception of African American leaders to the mainstream American public over the years.

For those of you fans who have promoted Captain Benjamin Sisko over the years, and celebrate his diversity among the tapestry that is DS9, we must also acknowledge the milestone of a real possibility of a President Barack Obama administration come this January 20th, 2009.

Barack Obama himself being an acknowledged Star Trek fan is well aware of the casting of Avery Brooks as the station commander of DS9.

Let us celebrate tonight for a real breakthrough for the African American community this week as Americans head to the polls and cast their ballots in making history!

^^^ "Star Trek Politician Fans" - http://www.trektoday.com/news/090308_02.shtml  ^^^

Barack Obama is only the most recent politician to admit that he is a fan of Star Trek.

As reported by Chicago Tribune, The admission came while Obama talked about the space program and NASA at a campaign stop in Wyoming. "I grew up on Star Trek," he said. "I believe in the final frontier." He went on to lament the fact that "NASA has lost focus and is no longer associated with inspiration."

Obama is not the first politician who is also a Star Trek fan. Al Gore, former Vice President of the United States, is an admitted fan. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, former Chief of Staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, is an original series fan who can name all seventy-nine episodes. Other American politicians who are Star Trek fans are: Alan Keyes (Deep Space Nine fan) and David Wu (Democrat from the House of Representatives from Oregon) who once made a speech on the House floor referring to people in the White House as Klingons. George Bush Sr. is supposedly to be a Star Trek fan.

Love of Star Trek is not confined to American politicians. Stephen Harper, Canadian Prime Minister is a fan of the original series. Finnish Parliament member Jyrki Kasvi is a fan who is partial to the Klingons.

Political royalty can also be counted as Star Trek fans. King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein, who rules Jordan, is such a fan that before he became King and was still a Prince, he once appeared in Star Trek Voyager: Investigations. To read more, head to the links located here and here.

What a crock. Your post is a slap in the face of every single black politician who has made a difference in this country in the last 150 years.

Re: A Barack Obama win is a great milestone for pioneering characters

Haha. Awesome.

I'm particularly comforted to know he sees that NASA has been meandering around over the past few decades.

Survival of our species is only guaranteed if we establish ourselves in space.

Re: A Barack Obama win is a great milestone for pioneering characters

Oh, right, so if you disagree with a pro-Obama post you MUST be a racist. And everyone who votes for McCain is a racist.

Highly illogical, Captain. :vulcan:

Actually, poster John Picard's avatar clearly shows a visage of Barack Obama with the heading "The Audacity of Socialism" which has been a McCain-Palin mantra against the Democratic presidential candiate in recent months.

I called him out on his bias.

However, this thread is in regards to "celebration" and "unity" of our great nation the United States. Let the healing begin.

I voted for Obama with the expectation that he will mandate the creation of a big-budget DS9 movie no later than 2011. :D

Presidents can do that, right?

And yours is rightie garbage.

Re: A Barack Obama win is a great milestone for pioneering characters

I conveniently forget that there are Republican Star Trek fans. Because in my mind, being a conservative is counter to everything that Star Trek stands for.

Hopefully I'll be able to forget again within an hour or so.

Huh?!? I thought it was McCain who promised that mandate! Sh*t! Too late; I already voted.

Obama hasn't won yet and still may not. This thread should have waited until tomorrow.

Re: A Barack Obama win is a great milestone for pioneering characters

Sisko was first.

Don't bring politics in here.

Re: A Barack Obama win is a great milestone for pioneering characters

What's next? A McCain win being a great milestone for nuBSG?

Sorry. This has nothing whatever to do with DS9. It is a thinly veiled attempt to push your political agenda in the Trek forums.

Take it to Misc or TNZ. And next time, it will be a warning for spamming.
