I finally watched the episode. I had fun. Pretty good.

My only complaint was the Clara U.N.I.T. scene. What is the point of having a top secret, super military and intelligence organization, that's sole purpose is the defense Earth from alien and paranormal threats; if they get showed up by a 20 something year old, middle school English teacher when it comes to deductive reasoning and critical thinking? All that tech, and even with a head start on solving the problem, and Clara deduces the answer is a fraction of the time.

Rant over

Why can't Moffat make U.N.I.T. more competent? Or is he inflating Clara's character with feats of brilliance?

I think he needs to get from point A to point B in his story and he doesn't really care what it takes to get there. Do it audaciously enough and people will laud how creative and unpredictable it was.

Yes but he makes a group like UNIT look like a clown troupe...

I agree, I thought that way too.

I'm not defending it but I remember a few times that the Brigadier and everyone seemed to not be able to solve anything at all with out 3 or 4 telling them what to do, maybe he's trying to kind of call back to that? But it's wrong because Clara is no Doctor.

This is straight from the Beebs, and should be available internationally (I can view it from Singapore).

I wish they would grow some balls and kill the Daleks off for good.

Never going to happen.

This trope is very common, even outside Doctor Who. Like in Star Trek, where anyone in Starfleet who isn't serving on the hero ships is basically useless phaser fodder, despite the fact they should have the same training. Even non-hero Starfleet captains incompetent boobs, even the ones who command ships of the same class as the hero ship and therefore should have similar training and experience as the Kirk or Picard or whoever.

Although, I will agree, substitute Osgood doesn't seem to be too competent at the job.

I wonder if Osgood will be back because that other Osgood was a Zygon

Or is this something everyone that reads spoilers and stuff ahead of time knows about?

Or, it could the reverse.

"Zapped" Osgood was the human and the Osgood returning is a Zygon wearing a human disguise.

Sincerely,

Bill

U.N.I.T uses whatever resources it has to deal with threats and Clara being the most recent companion to The Doctor who is their major resource is someone they would call on.

Let's not sell Clara short here, isn't she is a High School teacher.

Totally agree. They couldn't find the Doctor. Clara is the Doctor's companion so she's the best chance of finding him. She's been through a lot and isn't a bad person to call in to advise on the situation.

Missy's remarks about the "smell" might have pointed to a Zygon, but Missy can be insulting. Could go either way.

Um, River Song IS sexy...

Agree!

Agree more.

Naw, I think middle school is appropriate. Her student Courtney is series 7 was 13. Making her middle school age. All the kids look about that age.

You still come to the problem of U.N.I.T. essentially existing and palling around with the Doctor since his 2nd Incarnation. That is more than 50 years and several Doctor's they've interacted with (2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th) and yet they don't have a sufficient profile/pattern of behavior in order to adequate find the Doctor without the help of middle school English teacher. It's like Adama and Tigh going to Laura Rosalin for advice on how to deal with Cylons.

But again, The Doctor is the best resource they have when dealing with anything weird or out of the ordinary. So when they can't find him, they consult whoever has been traveling with him recently.
