I'm in two minds on this one...

Was that a biplane?

I swear it was a biplane flying over where the boy Davros was... How the hell do you get biplanes on Skaro?

Did the Doctor leave a 20th Century tank in 12th Century Earth?

Some of it irritated me but on the whole it wasn't a bad episode. I could live with it..

Davros even had a clip of "Genesis Of The Daleks" on hand. Ahh that was brilliant and loved that. So this episode ties into a whole bunch of things...

Missy was kind of the part that irritated me. They made her unnecessarily cruel in this episode, moreso then her previous outing which I liked..

If I had to give the episode a rating 6/10

The Bi-plane follows the Doctor's comments in Genesis Of The Daleks that the war started out with modern weapons and ended up with older ones. And Missy or the Master was always rather cruel, he never had any qualms about killing people.

The ratings were not good.

The BBC headline: "Doctor Who sees millions desert opening episode"

Viewers in their millions deserted Doctor Who as it returned to BBC One for a new series, according to overnight figures.

An average 4.6m watched Peter Capaldi back for his second series playing the Time Lord, compared with 6.8m for his full debut last year.

It was roundly beaten by ITV's X Factor, which had 7.3 million viewers.

I'm sure that, once the iplayer numbers are in, the number of viewers will be respectable. Doctor Who is timeshiftable in the way that something like The X-Factor is not.

But this is Skaro why would they need a biplane that looked like it came from Earth?

If you have ab engine that cannot lift a monoplane, why would you not have a biplane instead? And what would it look like?

Also: did anyone else notice Twelve talking in Four's voice? It's quite distinct.

Hold on , you and your family gave up on series 8? I realize the eighth series wasn't that great, but... it still wasn't a terrible, unwatchable show, in the least.

Hell, if you give up on season 15, or any of the Colin Baker/Sylvester McCoy seasons, I don't see why you should now.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'd watch Classic Who serials like Timelash, Time and the Rani or Paradise Towers before I'd ever rewatch In the Forest of the Night, Kill the Moon or The Caretaker from series 8.

So the Doctor rides in on a tank playing an electric guitar.

Somebody saw "Mad Max" earlier this year, didn't they?

I could not disagree more with this quote. Especially when Timelash and Time and the Rani are two of my most hated DW stories ever, whereas Forest is just a very, very bad story.

And how are the other two S8 stories so terrible? You may not have liked them, but they're objectively speaking sound stories, with a concise narrative that makes sense for the show. Seriously.

Who said anything about making sense? The three classic who serials I listed have narratives that make sense, too. The three Series 8 serials were just s%^t, not because they were confusing, but because they were just bad. Kill the Moon was extremely stupid, had a stupid conflict (7 billion people's lives are worth more than the life of one space egg Clara, not matter which way you think about it) and everyone, even the Doctor, was generally an idiot. Plus, the horrible child actor didn't help. The Caretaker was all about junk child actors and Danny Pink, and was completely worthless. Give me The Rani as Mel any day, at least she's still a better actor and a more interesting character than Danny Pink.

In the end, you said it best. Two of those Classic stories are, by your own words, your most hated stories, but you don't represent every Who fan. So, it makes sense you wouldn't rewatch those stories over the NuWho stuff, but I definitely would. Time and the Rani at least stars the good version of the 7th Doctor and has a few morbid laughs at the stupidity, and Timelash has my favorite Classic Doctor and his best companion. That's more than the three Series 8 episodes I listed have. Heck, I'd probably watch Timelash over Listen, too.

Time and the Rani stars the good version of the 7th Doctor? McCoy has never been worse at the part! He's awful, and so's everyone in it, bar Mara as the Rani.

And I don't represent every fan, but when I say this, I do represent the VAST majority of them. No one really likes Time and the Rani, period.

Take Missy's little speech in the square to Clara about the nature of her and the Doctor's friendship and hear in John De Lancie's voice as Q.

I don't like it either, its complete junk. Easily the worst episode of the "Good" 7th Doctor's era. Its still better than the three Series 8 episodes I mentioned, though, and you don't represent whether or not people think Timelash or Time and the Rani are worse than the series 8 episodes, or whether or not people would watch one over the other. Your apparent disdain for the 6th Doctor and part of the 7th Doctor's eras doesn't apply to everyone (and you certainly seem to go out of your way to bash them, I don't think even my hatred of Clara or evil 7th come up as much). I'm not arguing that the classic who episodes I mentioned are good episodes, they're not. They're just more watchable to me then the Series 8 episodes I mentioned.

Also, I count the 7th Doctor from Time and the Rani to Dragonfire as the "Good" 7th Doctor regardless of the material or actual acting, and everything after as Sylvester McCoy playing the "Bad" 7th Doctor, since he's basically a more screwed up version of The Master at that point (with none of Anthony Ainley's awesomeness).

Bash them? I love the Sixth Doctor. But his TV stories were, by and large, junk.

Hell, I'm listening to a Sixth Doctor audio as I type this! His BF outfit is my avatar at the time being! He's a great Doctor when he has the scripts that examplify his strengths. Timelash is far, far, far from Colin's better stories. Its insultingly terrible. I suggest you buy his Last Adventure box set and see how good he could be.

And I forgot your crazy views about the Seventh Doctor. :p But for whats worth, I can't really stand Anthony Ainley. Second worst Master of OldWho, after Eric Roberts.

Anyway, back on topic: I prefer even the worst episode of series 8 to the drivel you just mentioned. Sorry, but a Doctor playing the spoons is not my idea of any sort of entertainment.

Hopefully part two can complete the story, but it's a good start to the new season thus far.

Total agreement, on that and your other comments as well. I was highly entertained and even enjoyed the totally ridiculous scene with the Doctor, his tank and guitar in the Middle Ages. I can't help but wonder who's idea that was, Capaldi's or Moffat's.

I'm divided on whether Missy and Clara were transported out (by Missy herself) or if they ARE gone and the Doctor does have to go back in time to fix things. That always makes for a good dilemma, and I would assume that by going back to save young Davros is what will save the two women as well.

I love Michelle Gomez, but I'm still having a hard time reminding myself that this really is the Master. That said, I hope Moffat hangs onto her.

This was a really good premier and I think I'll wait until next Saturday to watch it again, so I can see the whole story in one piece.

I am the lone holdout in our family.

I hold Season 23, The Trial of a Timelord, and 24 as the two weakest seasons in Classic Who. Seasons 22, 25, and 26 (the Baker/McCoy years), along with Season 15, had good stories.

The problem when I think about is that the Moffat stories are cluttered. This clutter puts me a distance from the story itself. I believe that "The Magician's Apprentice" could have done without the subplot of the planes frozen in a time lock. Focus on the plot of the Doctor hiding from Davros and the search by Missy and Clara for the Doctor.

During Series 8, I did not feel myself as emotionally invested in the Doctor or Clara. In series past, I have felt emotionally invested in the Doctor and his companions. There were episodes where I was crying at the ending. I want to feel, I need to care, for these characters. Otherwise, why am I watching this franchise? I am hoping that at least one episode from Series 9 makes me feel connected to the Doctor or Clara on an emotional level. So far, for me, the series has had an inauspicious beginning.
