97 Years.

Owain Taggart

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Today I learned that my last living Grandparent died peacefully in his sleep. He was 97 years old. That's quite a long life, and I can say without a doubt that he lived long and prospered.

I was quite close to him. I've always made long visits to be with these grandparents, and we did everything. He was a great Grandfather. We would often play games together, either Checkers, Crokinole and sometimes even Croquet. But our favourite was definitely crokinole.

He grew up in a small town in the province of Quebec, of which his Father was mayor of, and lived among 5 other siblings. The house he grew up in would most likely be called a mansion, as it had its own tennis court and its own professional croquet assembly.

He had quite a nice long career as an RCMP officer. He would often tell us stories about his adventures, the way all good grandfathers do. He'd sing songs from his day and age the way all good grandfathers do. One year, he had been chosen among his fellow officers to escort the Queen on one of her first visits to Canada.

He's lived a long good life; a long and prosperous life. I'm proud to have been his grandson.

Wonderful thread. That's a life worthy of celebration :). Thank you for sharing. I can't imagine having that kind of history in my memory... all that knowledge and character lives on in you and the family.

97 years is indeed a good run, and it sounds like he made the most of it, too. I'm glad you can celebrate his life rather than just mourn his death :).

My condolences on the loss of your grandfather, but he did indeed have a fantastic life. He was witness to some of the most amazing years in human history.

Thank you. I appreciate the time I got to spend with him. Due to our geographic distance, we've had to plan little visits. I somehow knew it would happen this year, and I wanted to get the most out of it. Four months to this day, he was put in a nursing home because he needed round-the-clock care. He's certainly had an amazing life. He was an amazing man.

I'm sorry you lost him, but what a lovely tribute. I'm glad you got to know him and spend time with him. I never knew my grandfathers.

He'll be in my prayers.

Here's a great picture of him of not only historical interest, but personal interest as well.

This is him in the background in his dress uniform. On the left is the Duke of Edinburgh, and on the right is the Governor General of the time, and I have no idea who the guy in the middle in front of my Grandfather is. The picture is taken in the 50's, but not sure of the exact year, but I think it's 1954.

I never knew my grandfathers.

On my mother's side he died in 1967, 11 years before I was born. Apparently I was very much like him.

On my dad's side, he died in 1982 when I was four, although I have no memories of him, and I've only managed to find a handful of photos of me with him.

To the OP, my condolences for your loss. 97 is a great innings. I would love to last that long.

That sounds about right. You can see what appears to be the same airplane near the start of this clip of newsreel footage from that tour:

Hey, thanks for the link to that. Much appreciated. It could be he's even in that video!

You know, seeing that, you can definitely see some of the resemblance Prince William has for Prince Philip in those videos.
