92nd Annual Academy Awards

Parasite (film) would win, simply because it won literally the most number of awards by the many industry associations in the Western hemisphere, by a large margin. The margin isn't small. The same would be true for Adam Driver (actor). In eight of 10 years, they follow this trend. In 2, you lose all the betting money.

With actresses, the Oscar's voting population, seem to follow rules that I don't understand. It's very fuzzy.

Having just seen 1917, I not quite sure what all the fuss is about. The cinematography is great, but the whole "one-shot" thing is a bit of a stunt.

Running out of time (red carpet), so here are my choices.

Full disclosure, I did not see a lot of these films, but much like the Academy members, I will use my 'feeling' to see who should win. I concede that it's part of the game, despite how film literate one tries to be. There's only so many hours in a day!

I haven't seen all the movies but I really don't think race or gender played any role in the selections this year. If anything I think they would want to find diversity in order to look good. I think it's pretty well known though this is very good year for movies. Some years it's hard to find movies that are deserving and then this year you have snubs who would be picked in other years. At some point the discussion might want to come up as to how well this movie year holds up to 1994,1999 and 1982.
Jason

It does seem like there wasn't an intention to be diverse this year, and that's interesting compared to the strong showing last year.

At the end of the day like any award the Oscar is a popularity contest rather than an objective appraisal of how good a film is. If, for example, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood wins best picture, is that because they objectively think it's the best film, or because Hollywood tends to love films about Hollywood--especially ones that portray tinsel town in a somewhat idealised light?

Agree on the Hollywood thing. I feel like Once Upon will win big, because Hollywood. Look at what happened with LaLa Land and best picture (Moonlight). Hollywood awarding itself is frequently an entertaining reveal. Cue the glitz.

Well, still #OscarsSoWhite in most categories. Disappointed Cynthia Erivo lost both best actress and best Song.

The few exceptions were #OscarsSoKorean (NOT a complaint )

A few thoughts.

I haven't seen Parasite but haven't heard anything remotely negative against it from any review which have all been incredibly gushing, plus a foreign language film winning best film and best director Oscar is great.

I liked Joker and thought Phoenix was incredible so no issues with that. Rene was great in Judy so again no major issues (though I'd have given it Ronan for Little Women personally) Haven't seen Marriage Story yet so no idea how good Johansson is, or Dern, but would have liked Florence Pugh to get best supporting actress. Re best supporting actor, I mean I liked Pitt in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, but he pretty much was just playing himself. I was hoping Pesci would get it.

Similarly while I liked Jojo Rabbit I thought Gerwig's script for Little Women was much better.

Some glaring omissions in the nominations (now seen Uncut Gems and while I'm not completely sold on the film Sandler is extremely good) but that's par for the course I suppose.

Parasite deserved it. I bet 1917 was a close second, though. I think Harriet being a mediocre film hurt Cynthia Erivo's chances of winning, but she'll have Golden Globe and Emmy wins after her excellent performance in The Outsiders.

Adam Sandler is the rightful Best Actor winner and you can't convince me otherwise. Willem Dafoe and/or Robert Pattinson should have been up there too.

Parasite was an incredibly made film and I can see why it won. I personally preferred 1917 (and several other films) to it. But, it was an interesting work for sure. Kudos to the cast and crew!

I don't think anyone could have expected Parasite to come out on top winning 4 of the awards. That's amazing. The director ties with Walt Disney in the amount of awards won in one night, apparently.

With 4 Oscars, Parasite is far from the movie with the most wins, though 4 Oscars especially, in the categories in which they won, is incredible.
Because the audience applause was not filtered out this year as in previous moments, PARASITE's Best Picture nomination was given tremendous applause and you knew it was going to win seconds before it did. TV-wise, however, that applause cuts down on the suspense.
Popularity among audience members has never been an accurate gauge of Oscar winners, at least from what I’v observed. It’s an accurate gauge of which movies or actors, etc, are most popular among audience members. I’v seen years where the clear audience favorite failed to win major awards.

That being said, I was happy to see a movie directed by a POC win 4 Oscars. In particular I was really happy to see him win Best Director which has been probably the most segregated Oscar in the Academy’s existence. Alfonso Charon, I think, is racially Caucasian.

The Best Picture nominees I’m most anxious to see, are Parasite and 1917. I’’v seen some Korean dramas I’v liked, and one movie (Train to Busan), that I thought was at least fascinating. As for 1917, I’v always had a weakness for true war stories.

I'm pretty sure Owain meant by an individual, not a film or studio. Bong Joon Ho won four awards as director, writer, and producer.

I finally got to watch Parasite this evening. I tried to see it before the Oscars but I didn't have the free time during the weekend to watch the copy I borrowed from the library.

Anyway, it was absolutely fantastic, and deserved every single award it won. I really wish Song Kang-ho had been nominated for Best Actor.

Yeah, it was pretty glaring that he or Park So-dam weren't nominated. Last night was a historic moment but it also shined how far the Acadmey (and the industry) still needs to go.

Yep, that's exactly what I meant, hence why I likened it to Walt Disney's win. That's quite a significant achievement for an individual. And I had to laugh at each time he said he would drink. Each time on stage, he'd pronounce his desire to drink a bit more.

Btw, did they do some of the more technical awards this year? Usually they mention wins that weren't broadcast but were awarded earlier, but either I missed them or they didn't include them.

They sometimes show it some years, don't they? I vaguely remember seeing special awards being presented during the actual broadcast. But that may have been done away with when they decided to streamline the Oscars.

Yeah, misunderstood Owain Taggert”s post.

No worries. I can see how it could have been confusing now that I went back and looked at it. I first mention the movie in general winning the 4 awards and then switch to talking about the director's personal achievement. I mean, sure, I think as a movies go, I think LOTR won more awards, but this director had many hats :)
