9/22 - Video on the ST: D Costumes

GaiusBaltarBand

Lieutenant

In the latest costume video, you can see costume concept art up on the wall. It looks like Burnham in a more traditional science uniform.

I think a LOT of the crying that has been done about "canon" and costume has been already thought out by the production team. I would love it if there's a slow evolution that takes the legs out of that old argument........The props are PERFECT in my opinion.

The resolution I captured that image at isn't the greatest. On a second look it appears to be more along the lines of the "happy transporter accident" mentioned by Fuller. It looks like the TOS movies maroon tunic, but in a science color. Testing out both a black and white undershirt along with a grey variant and a belt variant. I'd guess these were earlier attempts at the costumes, but who knows.

I'm fine with something different, the new costumes certainly look nice. I find it to be an odd business decision though. The primary colors are so iconic and easily marketable. Simple works a lot better for products and recognition.

It should be fun to eventually see the concept work.

Yeah, there seems to be an automatic assumption that if we see something that doesn't immediately make sense, or looks quite different from what we expect, it's never going to be explained and it's a sign that the creators "don't care" and "are doing a reboot" or any of the other umpteen claims we keep hearing.

Ok so there ARE three colors to the piping:
Gold - Command
Silver - Science
Bronze - Opertaions

The above said - In all the other videos with episode footage for me the differentiation between the Gold and Bronze is hard to make out. I will say that overall though that pallet is closer to "The Cage" than TOS as in "The Cage" they pretty much had Gold, Tan/Bronze, and Blue - but the uniform colors in "The Cage" weren't as bright/vivid (and yeah the 'vivid color' TOS change was due to: "Hey look it's BETTER on Color TV - Buy one from RCA...an NBC subsidiary"); but IDK - maybe ST: D is trying to give more of a nod to "The Cage" era color scheme - and Collars (from "The Cage" Female collars) with the pronounced front collar 'flap'.

Hard to tell, but from the angle of the collars it looks like they would have had a fold-over look sort of like the monster-maroons, but with a "The Cage" set of muted department colors (as has been mentioned in a few other interviews).

So it sounds like the blue is a reference to Enterprise, I was wondering about that.
Glad to hear I'm not the only one worried about being able to tell the bronze and gold apart. I kind of wish they hadn't gone with two colors that were so similar.

You can see it here, too. Also, there se
em to be mustard and red versions of the Discovery uniform hanging on the rack. Note the white/silver stripes on the shoulders and sides.

One of the previews shows Burnham in a mustard outfit.

I'd like to think it was inspired by this. I think the color is.
