8.8 Earthquake in Chile

Aw, man, right after we dodged a bullet in Japan. :(

This news is going to get worse, I'm afraid.

CNN now reporting that essentially the entire Pacific is under a tsunami warning. As far away as Japan and New Zealand, though those areas will have some time to prepare. The communities around Concepcion would have had no warning.

:eek::eek::eek: 8.8 is huge.

And here too ... and warnings from the Bureau of Meteorology also issued warning for Norfolk Island in the Pacific Ocean

One of the little comments on my board page said "Pray for Chile" and I thought "uh oh, wonder if it's an earthquake", and unfortunately it was. 8.8? Wow! All my thoughts and warm wishes go out to the people of Chile and all who are involved in the after effects of this quake. :(

8.8...dang, that's almost as bad as the New Madrid quake! This is horrible for the people of Chile.

And I pray the New Madrid won't be next. :(

ETA: If you are in Hawaii, you need to get to high ground immediately.

^ Agreed! Also, we live close to the New Madrid fault line, so like you, here's hoping it decides to remain quiet on the matter.

I'm glad that my friend who is studying in Chile has already checked in on facebook telling everyone he is alright. It's terrible that there are those who are not as fortunate.

Funny you should mention the new Madrid line. We've kept getting 2.0 and had 3.0 tremors in Oklahoma and Lincoln counties for the past couple of weeks. Don't the fault lines from New Madrid snake out this way? There's a fault line under Jones, Oklahoma, which is in the far northeastern corner just past the OKC metro area. It's shaken several times for the past couple of weeks. Nothing major, but when you can actually feel the earthquakes in Oklahoma, it gives you pause. We're not accustomed, so even if it's just a second, you're like, "What was that?" :wtf:

Yep. We live in the red zone.
You would live somewhere in the yellow zone, but would definitely feel it.

We're on tsunami alert here. Expecting a 3m high wave sometime in the next hour.

I'm about 120m above sea level but the lower areas might get hit.

Will post an update.

O ... M ... G ... !!!

That was one mega-quake. Scary to be living in the Pacific Ring of Fire.

EDIT:

I just realized there were much stronger earthquakes of 9+ magnitudes (Alaska, Indonesia). But 8.8 is still pretty powerful.
