75 long-lost silent movies being returned to US

Hey mate, storage of film and tape was and is expensive, and in the old days, money was sparse, that's why what happened, happened.

The people who have searched the globe trying to patch together the missing episodes of Doctor Who probably don't agree with you.

I know they are, and they're doing a fine job of doing so, but still, back in the day, that's how it was. At least the people who ran the DuMont Television Network didn't have that problem, due to the Electronicam system that they used; all of The Honeymooners as well as anything else on DuMont is now preserved. But they were the exception to the rule.

Dusty is on the mark. We need to remember that we can't judge these folks with the benefit of hindsight.

Just as the Trek folks didn't foresee repeats and the fan explosion to come, much less Trek on home video....or home video at all....the Doctor Who folks were in the same boat.

They operated under the normal conditions of the day.....Doctor Who was not then the institution that it would later become. Home video as a concept did not exist.....hell, did they even play repeats in those days? And no one could have foreseen the developments that occured in those areas, or the rise of fandom as we know it.

It truly sucks, but it is what it is.

Kirkman, I'm waiting for the new release of Metropolis as well. Sadly, it doesn't look the restored footage will match the existing footage....or at least from the clips I've seen. So it's a mixed blessing. Still, it's better than nothing I suppose, I just hope it's not so jarring as to detract from the story.

Anybody know or heard anything about the status of the Chaplin Keystone restorations? I thought they were supposed to be released last year?

Mistral....Yanni? I'm guessin' you're joking cuz I've never heard of him scoring a silent. Chic Corea plays jazz so I could see him....
