A tsunami warning has been issued for Hawaii after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake rocked an island off the west coast of Canada. The United States Geological Survey said the quake hit the Queen Charlotte Islands at 8.05pm on Saturday local time (4.05pm Sunday, NZT) and was centred 155km south of Masset, British Columbia.
Gerard Fryer, senior geophysicist at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre, told CNN that Hawaii could expect waves between one to two metres high. "We are recommending coastal evacuation," he said.
The centre said the first tsunami could hit the islands by about 10.30pm local time (9.30pm Sunday NZT).
Fryer told CNN the waves would not be as significant as those generated by the devastating earthquake that struck Japan in March 2011, leaving thousands dead.
Hawaii news website staradvertiser.com said tsunami warning sirens have sounded across Hawaii and officials have told people in inundation zones to evacuate immediately.
“A tsunami has been generated that could cause damage along coastlines of all islands in the state of Hawaii,” the centre said in a statement. “Urgent action should be taken to protect lives and property.”
The centre originally said there was no threat to the islands, but a warning was later issued and remains in effect until 7pm Sunday (6pm Monday, NZT). A small craft advisory is in effect until Sunday morning.
New Zealand Civil Defence spokesperson Ian Maclean said there was no tsunami threat to New Zealand following the earthquake.
A small tsunami prompted state and federal officials to warn people in southeast Alaska and down the Canadian coast to take precautions.
The USGS said the 7.7-magnitude quake shook the area and was followed by a 5.8 magnitude aftershock several minutes later.

Hope all is well.

So about a half an hour away from Hawaii right now.

The CNN link says there's a huge 15,000-strong Halloween street party going on in Waikiki at the moment, so it's going to be interesting evacuating all of them since it's in the inundation zone.

Hopefully it shouldn't be too bad (smaller than the tsunami that hit Hawaii after the Japanese quake), but let's hope everyone is okay. Glad the effects of the earthquake in Canada were minor, as well.

ETA: Tsunami warnings were also issued for Southern Oregon and Northern California as well.

So, they've gone through four waves now and the biggest was 30" but the average is about a foot high. No damage reported so far, and while it's possible (but unlikely) that a bigger one can follow, it looks like things will be okay.

Thank goodness. That thread title scared me. I'm glad it was minor. :bolian:

Always a relief to hear that casualties and major damage were avoided. :) Thanks for keeping us all informed. There are so many posters here I can never know how many of our number might be affected.

For the record, the Queen Charlotte Islands were renamed Haida Gwaii ("islands of the people" in Haida) in 2010.

I'd known of the Haida for quite a long time (fantastic ceremonial masks, among other things,) but didn't learn of the official change in designation for the island group until last night when I went to look up this quake.
