Boy, 6, misses bus so he tries driving to school
He ran off the road several times before hitting embankment, utility pole

WICOMICO CHURCH, Va. - Having missed his bus, a 6-year-old Virginia boy tried to drive to school in his family's sedan — and crashed.

State police say the boy suffered only minor injuries and eventually arrived at school after being evaluated at a local hospital. Police did not immediately return a call Tuesday asking who brought him there.

.....

Police say the boy, who wasn't identified, missed the bus, took the keys to his family's 2005 Ford Taurus and started toward school while his mother was asleep.

He ran off the road several times before hitting an embankment and utility pole. Police say he wasn't wearing a safety belt.

I missed the bus once. I just started walking to school.

Re: 6-year-old misses school bus, so he attempts to drive there instea

Shouldn't a six year old have some sort of adult supervision while boarding the school bus?

Re: 6-year-old misses school bus, so he attempts to drive there instea

When I missed the bus, I considered it a day off.

Darn over achievers.

Or at very least be supervised by an older child. When I was six I used to walk home from school with my two older sisters (aged 8 and 9) and my two cousins (aged 9 and 11)

Re: 6-year-old misses school bus, so he attempts to drive there instea

Nowadays yeah.

When I was a kid, 6 year olds could walk to school or the bus stop unmolested.

Not anymore.

Re: 6-year-old misses school bus, so he attempts to drive there instea

I don't it is any more dangerous today for a child to walk to the bus than it was in the past. It is only that we are more a aware of bad things happening to children. Pedophiles prayed on children just as much in the past as they do today.

For example the last time a pedophile was convicted of murdering boys in Tasmania was in the mid-1970s. The guy concerned killed two 9 year oldboys. The last time there was a conviction for such a murder of a girl was in 1946 (the perp was the last man hanged in Tasmania) . There has been sexual assaults of children since then but I am not convinced that the amount of such assaults are any higher now than they have been in the past.

Yet Tasmanian parents today are scared to allow their children as much freedom as I had as a child.

I felt very sorry for two small children on New Years Eve. I was sitting at a small beach waiting for a fireworks to start. It was obvious that the children wanted to join the other children playing on the beach but their mother wouldn't let them. i heard her tell them "it isn't safe". Instead the kids had to sit down and wait for twenty minutes for the fireworks to begin.

No, not really. Some kids can be trusted at that age. I was boarding the bus alone pretty early too.

Re: 6-year-old misses school bus, so he attempts to drive there instea

And I thought I was devoted to getting to school! O.o

Re: 6-year-old misses school bus, so he attempts to drive there instea

Most kids would have been happy cause it means a chance at missing school that day, or at least going in later.

Re: 6-year-old misses school bus, so he attempts to drive there instea

Wonder if this kid is a Harry Potter fan.

(JKR, won't somebody please think of the children!!!)

Mistake #1

6 year olds need an SUV, for the higher ride height.

Re: 6-year-old misses school bus, so he attempts to drive there instea

What the kid lacks in intellegence and common sense, he makes up for in determination. It's too bad there are so many better things that he could be determined about rather than ruining his day off from school. :(

Sounds like a future NASCAR driver to me -- he kept hitting stuff till an embankment stopped him! -- RR

Kids these days, driving to school, eloping to Africa, shooting you for stepping on their foot

Re: 6-year-old misses school bus, so he attempts to drive there instea

his mother was asleep while her six-year-old was catching the bus?!

it's not the kid who needs help!

Probably why the parents were arrested for child indangerment. How fair that is, I'm not sure. I see young kids out on the street in front of their houses or sub-divisions every day. All I know is that there is no way I would put my 6 year old out onb the street alone waiting for a bus.

Oh, please. The only reason my parents were ever up when I was trying to catch a bus was usually because I was making a ton of noise. If a kid can handle himself and get the job done, then I don't see why parents need to be awe-strikingly worried about it.

So a kid deciding to take their parents car and driving away with it isn't worth the worry? Especially at that age.

Re: 6-year-old misses school bus, so he attempts to drive there instea

And how many kids are stupid enough to try a stunt like that? I suppose I should revise my stance to, "As long as you don't have a kid who's dumb as a rock, then there's not much reason to get awe-strikingly worried about it."

Maybe this comes from me not being a parent, but somehow my kid stealing the car doesn't quite make the list of major things to worry about happening.
