50th Anniversary Limited Theatrical Re-Release of all Films?

So 2016 is closer than you think. This year is Trek's 45th, but the big event for Trekkies is down the line a bit more. 50th anniversary. I'd personally imagine if Trek where going to attempt a small-screen return, they would use that time for such. NuTrek 2 is slated for 2012, but could end up in 2013 if things keep stalling. Which will make NuTrek 3 for 2015/16 -- and a tie in with a big anniversary would be good.

But I'm prattling on off-point!

Do you think TPTB (Paramount) would put any thought or effort into a limited theatrical re-release of every Star Trek film? TMP through TUC, GEN through NEM, and perhaps even NuTrek 1 and 2?

More importantly: would you make an effort to see such? To trek to a theater perhaps a bit out of the way in order to watch all those "old movies" on the big screen??

I can't imagine them doing a full 3000-4000+ theater re-release of all those movies like Star Wars did with the original trilogy for her 20th. But I could imagine a one-a-month limited run at 6-800 theaters nation wide, an "event" type thing. Perhaps even only re-releasing each film for a given weekend or two weekends?

Would you prefer they only re-release select films? Perhaps skipping over TMP, TFF, maybe either INS or NEM?

I'm only 26, I've only been a Trekkie since 1996. First Contact was my first big screen experience, and I can still remember seeing it on the big screen: it made that much of an impact. I stood in the back after returning from the bathroom to watch the Worf/Picard bridge confrontation scene, and then the Lily/Picard "Ahab" scene, and was just blown away. So for me, and a lot of younger folk, it would be our first chance to see TWOK or TUC on the big screen ever.

For those of you that originally saw such back in the day, would you make a special effort if such a thing was done, to go and re-see all the films to celebrate the 50th?

Would you take your kids, or (gasp for the oldies!) grandkids?

Would you drive an hour out of the norm to do such?

I don't think so. Star Trek is slowly dying off. By 2020, I don't think many people outside the hardcore will even know what it is.

Nah but I do like the idea of Best of Both Worlds remastered released as a limited release film.

RAMA

Really? Even with the new film being well received by the public at large? Granted, it banks on the success of the next film or two, but I'd say if it keeps the momentum, Treck should still be healthily alive by 2020.

Its doing very well, tyvm. Perhaps not to the level when STNG was out, but with a new movie and hopefully a new TV series in 5 yrs or so, ST will be alive and kicking for a long time to come.

Remember the people who said Star Trek 09 was going to flop?

Well, regardless of the future fate of the franchise as a whole...

Would you like to see some sort of theatrical re-release of the films?

All of them, or just select ones?

Would you make an effort to go to such if it was a limited release?

Would you try to use it to get your kids/grandkids into Trek?

I just saw Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country in 70mm a few months ago. It was a great time. I'd love the chance to get to see all of the films in the theatre again.

But, outside of Fathom Events doing this, I don't see it happening (and if they're the ones behind it, it will just be a dodgy digital projection of the films, which isn't worth my money). Re-releases are pretty rare these days, and re-releases of ten films in a series? This isn't Star Wars.

Rather than a theatrical release, I could envision a Blu-ray Deluxe Special Edition of the first 10 films, especially if they were re-mastered for such a release. However, although ST09 is popular, I do not think the older movies are still viable for the big-screen market.

The next film comes out in 2012, followed by another one in 2014. And then it will be rebooted again. Maybe it takes even another 7 years before that even happens.

Star Trek is still dying imo. That short outburst caused by one single movie doesn't mean anything.

Isn't that what NBC said about Star Trek in the 1960s? It was just a small show with mediocre ratings... a "short outburst". Yet, it has survived for 45 years thus far.

I don't know if the new movie found such a fanbase.

I’d love to see TMP on the big screen. I’d really love to see it in 3D.

Currently James Cameron is working on converting Titanic to 3D and Lucas is doing it with Star Wars. I’m looking forward to seeing how effective the conversion is.

As I said in my initial post, it banks on the success of the next film or two. If the next two films are as critically received and popular is the last one, then I can see Trek doing just fine going into 2020.

Possible 2016 50th Anniversary Limited Theatrical Movies event

Since Paramount has the films and may want to capitalize on the TV 50th anniversary and not care about hurting the CBS launch of the new Trek TV series
I wonder if Paramount would do this since STXIII will have been out for 2 months by September 2016. Would it mess up their Blu-ray release a few months later of STXIII?
Would they do a cinema marathon screening with Fathom Events or AMC theaters or just put out a remastered blu-ray box set and in 4k UHD?

Not a bad idea, but I'm not sure how many people would be up to sitting through a twenty-four-plus hour marathon.

Then again, didn't they do something similar with all the modern Marvel movies not long ago, leading up to the release of AGE OF ULTRON? I read some articles about that.

Might generate some free publicity for the new movie and TV show.

If the original six movies were rereleased for limited theatrical runs, the only ones I would bother going to see would be TMP, TWOK (because that is only one of two I never got to see on the big screen) and TUC. TVH is the other I never saw on the big screen, but it is not a priority to me.

I wouldn't mind seeing TSFS theatrically. Even though the whole wasn't necessarily greater than the sum of its parts, there was a lot of big stuff happening in the movie.

And how did such an old thread get bumped? :wtf:

I'd be there just to see The Motion Picture Director's Edition on the big screen. If they were to remaster it with a dual purpose - cinema run and Blu ray release to follow.
