50 Shades of Gray - New "Hot" Summer Book?

It seems each year there is a new hot book that everyone seems to be reading. There's the Harry Potters, Game of Thrones, Hunger Games, stuff like that. Well, on my vacation this week, the book "50 Shades of Gray" was brought up quite a bit and I even saw someone reading it. Is this 2012's hot novel or has it been out for a while. I've not actually read it (Not sure if I'm going to) but if anyone else has, was it good? Is it part of a series, or did this whole thing just pass me by?

And in not reading the threads on this and just posting (Just because I haven't posted in a while) I see there is already a thread on this. It can be closed I guess, even though if someone (A mod) wants to give me a cliffnotes version (I will read the other thread) as to why this book got so popular before you do, That would be cool.
