5 Doctor Who characters for spin offs

Anyone else see the article on the SyFy webiste? You can find it HERE.

I agree with all of them, except for Queen Elizabeth X. I thought she was a one-off character and there wasn't enough there to even imagine her in a spin-off.

I also find it amusing that the picture they used of the all-kinds-of-awesome Mark Sheppard as Canton is actually of him in Supernatural, playing Crowley. I'm pretty certain he's holding "the Colt."

Ugh, if there's a River Song spin-off I'll hate myself for watching it.

The only one that sounds interesting is the Canton Everett Delaware one, because it's the only one that wouldn't be what we've seen before. Both Torchwood and Sarah Jane gave us alien threats in the present day; let's do something different for once.

^I DO hope we get to see more of Canton, one way or another. I love Mark Sheppard; he always fun to watch.

If Sy-Fy has any part in a spin-off, it will most likely suck, so I'm kinda hoping not.

But, a Canton series would be the best choice and the easiest to distance from Doctor Who so's to stand on it's own.

River: no, she's on Who enough as it is and i say that as someone who likes her.

Liz Ten: No, can't see that beign interesting.

Sally Sparrow: no, that'd be crap. and besides, Carey's off being a filmstar...

Canton: don't see that happening...

Martha: no. that would either be a shoddy Torchwood rip-off or would involve some contrived shit for her to go off-Earth.

I disagree with all of them. Any of those characters would work well as part of an ensemble cast, but under no circumstances do any of them have what it takes to carry a show.

I disagree with all of them and I love River Song, Sally Sparrow, and Canton Everett Delaware III (I like Martha more than most but she's low on my favorite companion list). I simply can not see shows based on any of them working. River Song's allure comes from her relationship with The Doctor, Sally Sparrow was only interesting because of the setting and situation she was in, and Canton Everett Delaware III is awesome only because Mark Sheppard is awesome (and I agree with Steve that his show would be too much of a Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood rethread). Martha didn't work all that well when she was on Torchwood (her episodes were only good because they finally did something interesting with Owen) and I can't see a show focused on Liz 10 working because she bored me to tears.

That all being said, I'm surprised the article didn't mention the obvious choice, one which has been discussed several times in this forum: Madame Vastra and Jenny. That's one I would watch (and with the potential of Captain Jack showing up).

Well, Sally did carry the show for an episode so I think she'd have the potential (hypothetically - it's not as if it would ever happen).

The Sally Sparrow concept would be interesting, though it won't happen because Carey Mulligan is busy with other things. I'd probably recast it as a Spaced-esque sitcom, though. For that matter, you could do an Office-style sitcom with Donna Noble, the best temp in Chiswick. Or a college sitcom with a pre-regeneration Mels.

If you get the idea that I think the next spin-off should be a sitcom, you're right. You can't just do "Doctor Who without the Doctor"; that road leads to diminishing returns. You need to think outside the box completely.

That said, I wouldn't object to a period 1970 Canton series (or special), though I'd probably do it as a Torchwood 1970, with Jack.

If you're going to do a Martha series, drop the alien hunting completely. Have her join Doctors Without Borders or do something freelance like that, and she gets involved in medicine and politics in sub-Saharan Africa. Show Martha making a difference to make the world a better place.

Lady Christina would also be awesome. You could do a Modesty Blaise-style criminal caper series, with her always one step ahead of the law, and she has a UST relationship with the Interpol agent who knows she's up to no good but can't prove it.

I can't wait for twenty years from now, when Big Finish gets Tommy Knight, Yasmin Paige, Daniel Anthony, and Anjili Mohindra together as a top-notch alien fighting team comprised of two married couples.

Agreed. I'm hoping we'll get to see them again in some fashion, be it another appearance on Who, or in a special of their own, or in audio or even a novel.

River Song needs to be tied to the Doctor. She doesn't work on her own.

Martha is a very strong ensemble player. She needs to be part of a team, like Team TARDIS or Torchwood, as she has been in the past. And Freema won't do it as long as Law & Order UK is on, and those shows tend to last a decade or more as we know.

Sally Sparrow? Yes, but only if Carey Mulligan played her. Which means snowball's chance in hell unless her film career goes to pot.

Liz X? There wasn't enough established about her to make her viable as a solo character.

Canton? Ditto. I could see him becoming a companion someday, though.

Anyway, that list is clueless for not including Madame Vastra and Jenny who, unlike the other characters, arrived almost fully formed. Anyone coming into the show cold would immediately recognize A Good Man Goes to War as a "backdoor pilot". They need to jump on it while Neve McIntosh and the actress who played Jenny are still available for a series. Failing that, maybe for once the BBC will allow Big Finish to do something with a revival-era character.

Romana III (no I don't consider the audios, annuals or books cannon). Preferably played by an attractive and capable actress who can pull off being Doctorish. Someone like Carey Mulligan and Rachel Weisz.
