So — as an old desert rat at the time of Episode IV, was Ben Kenobi still working in the meatpacking industry? If not, how was he keeping himself fed? I doubt he had a pension or the Imperial equivalent of a 401(k), since that would lead right to him (and I’d be surprised if such things existed under that system anyway).

I think the 'Kenobi' novel* has him learning some of the Tusken's forging skills (including those black melon things that showed up in 'Mandalorian' & 'Book of Boba Fett'). Between that and the very occasional visit to Anchorhead for some seasonal farmhand work, and/or trading with Jawas, it seems plausible enough that he can look after himself.
*Officially non-canon, I know, but it seems reasonable enough.
