30GB Zune's Mass-Suicide...

What do you use for your casual MP3/portable music player ?

Oh settle down. The Zune is the best MP3 player on the market.

Not only is this a problem only effecting the very first design of the Zune...
It's also the only real technical issue they've had so far.
They've been extremely reliable and very well built devices.

You also failed to update this with the fact Microsoft has already resolved
the issue and all it requires is letting the Zune's battery die and recharging
it about 24 hours after the new year and restarting it.
It was a simple malfuction with the clock because of the fact this was a leap year.

Ti hi.. gawddamn newfangled crap, I use a walkman, you know with casettes, been reliable since 1985 or so. ;):p

Getting away from things bordering on religious discussions here for a second, how could a leap year be a problem for the base programming on these? It's not as though programmers don't have some sort of regularity on the whole leap year thing.

Could it have been the leap second thrown in that confused the programming?

I read that Microsoft will fix the problem before it occurs again in 2012 ;)

Nice bug though.

There's a bug in the Zune's internal clock that causes the Zune to hang on the boot screen the last day of any leap year. Just drain the battery and turn it on on 1st of January and it should function again just like before.

I love it when a company with so many programmers can't even compensate for a Leap Year....

(Really makes me sweat when they putting MS on military weapons systems...)

"Uh,Mr President...?"

Oh they did use M$ NT once on a Ticonderoga class ship, USS Yorktown IIRC, it had to be town back to dock on several occasions because the ship had become inoperable..

Haha, I always find it funny it's only those around me the
whine about these things that end up with problems with them.

I am using a 5th gen Apple 30 gb iPod running the custom Rockbox firmware. Sure the firmware might void my warranty but how else am I going to get a high quality portable player hardware wise with software features such as replaygain, cuesheets, wavpack/musepack playback, parametric equalizer, etc.

Zunes are garbage. If you're dumb enough to buy a Zune you deserve an mp3 player that acts like that.
Thanks. I hope my wife enjoys her Christmas present. I got her a Zune 120GB. I'm a network administrator with 23 years of tech support and break-fix experience. I researched my purchase pretty well, too, and I believe she'll be very happy with it. We've already noticed several features that her iPod 30GB didn't have - the iPod that just died for no apparent reason, just outside of warranty, like iPods are prone to do.

Oh, and come Jan. 20th, we'll have a president who uses a Zune, too. Thought you'd like to know. :p

1. Zunes are not garbage. they're the best PMP out there . . . the 1st gen Zune 30s run on the exact same firmware as the current generation. ipods don't do that
2. I've had no problems with my Zune in the time I've had it, whereas my room mate's ipods have frozen up and needed to be sent to Apple Core or whatever it's called
3. don't call me dumb

Good lord, are the fanboys fighting an iPod vs Zune war too? I had no idea ... The whole Xbox vs Playstation thing is bad enough.
