"3001: The Final Odyssey"... a SyFy Original Miniseries

And there was the inertialess drive, derived from zero-point energy.

I think the first thing that comes to mind when I think of 3001 is the religion of the 31st Century: The Deists and the Theists. One believes that there's no more than one god, the other believes there's no less than one god.

And, of course, Nova Scorpio. They wonder if it was a zero-point energy accident. But they fear it was a judgement.

The best things about it were the revival of Poole, which gave it a nice circularity, and the discovery of the original Monolith at Olduvai, for the same reason. And the tour of the 31st century. I like that sort of thing, especially as done by Clarke. Imperial Earth is another great example of that. But the best is the excised chapters from 2001 that were published in The Lost Worlds of 2001, describing the civilization behind the Monolith (and starring Clindar from "Expedition to Earth"). Pure gold for those of us in it for the sense of wonder.

It wasn't a big part of the story (sorry Poole). I just remembered it sticking out (there's no way not to sound like you're making puns here) to me as funny when the nurse or doctor gasped at seeing his circumcised dick.
That's quite a detail to remember. I read it recently and I don't even remember it.

Well, clearly you've become much more desensitized to penises than I have. :p;)

No, it just stuck in my mind since when I read the book in 1997/98? I wasn't as wise in the ways of the internets as I am now, and hadn't seen a hundred angry circumcision debates on TrekBBS yet, so the shocked reaction struck me funny.

Heh, yeah, I understand what you mean. It's an odd thing to be shocked about. By then, it should be commonplace, unless of course they've stopped the practice.

I'm looking forward to the miniseries because it's grand scale space opera from Ridley Scott (I still have hope even after Prometheus)

That's a good point. I found plenty to enjoy about Prometheus (visuals, concepts, atmosphere), as flawed as it was.

But we have become keenly more observant and even more sceptical.

The smartest people during 1984 all mostly thought that special effects in 1984 where believable.

I had some direct communication with Arthur C Clarke regarding 3001 back in the 1990's. I wrote him some letters about it, and was amazed to get replies to all of them, even though they were brief, as I heard he almost never replied to 'fan mail'.

Anyway, here's scans of the two replies that deal with 3001:

ACC reply dated February 1996

ACC reply dated July 1996

In case his handwriting isn't clear, here's what he wrote:

FIRST SCAN:

At the top:

"Sorry I scorched NZ in Hammer of God"

Next to 'Yours faithfully':

"Many thanks! Just had long call from Buzz (Aldrin), I'm plugging his excellent Encounter with Tiber."

Bottom of page:

"Yes - if Galileo sends something really stunning back from Jupiter! So I can't even say 'maybe' until 1998."

"All good wishes" Arthur C Clarke

SECOND SCAN

His arrows indicate he's now finished 3001, and writes, "I still can't believe it!"

Bottom of page:

"Just came across your letter of 30 Jan. Just completed 3001. Hurah!
Best wishes. Arthur C Clarke. 15 Jul 96"

Oh, the 'First day cover' I sent him was one marking the 25th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing.

The special envelope had this holographic stamp on it:

Astronaut Stamp

While a rather small picture of the actual envelope, complete with a Shuttle franking mark, can be found here:

You're one heck of a lucky guy, Technomage. :)

Very interesting to see him mention Encounter with Tiber! He ended up writing the foreword.
