Ok folks, what in the hell is Paramount thinking letting the retail price of the blu ray Star Trek release this November to be listed as 39.99??

Did they forget were in a recession? Who the hell wants to fork over even 30 dollars for this?

The movie was a huge hit for Trek standards, and there is no reason this blu ray should be set this high in price. And the 3rd disc?? Who really wants a digital copy?? I'm buying it for the friggin blu-ray disc, not some extra copy I don't need or want.

Recession Recession Recession. If people want to be involved in Blu Ray more, than blockbuster movies like Star Trek shouldn't be retailing for 40 freaking dollars.

Anyone agree?? Oh and lastly, if your going to charge me 40 bucks, at least put forth the effort and offer an extended cut somewhere on one of those 3 discs!!!!

Amazon.com has it for $27.99.

I suspect that the $39.99 price is the "suggested retail price" and that (ironically) you will probably find it difficult to actually find it on sale for that (full) price except at gift shops, airports, and other unusual outlets.

Best Buy, Fry's Electronics, Borders, et. al. will all have it "on sale" for less when the discs come out.

This is nothing new but I am glad to point it out to those who simply do not know how things work. :)

You're only going to have to pay MSRP for this movie if you go to someplace like Borders or Barnes & Noble.

Amen to that. Street price is always considerably lower than suggested retail. There will be tons of options for buying the set at discount both online (Amazon, Deep Discount DVD) and brick and mortar stores (Best Buy, Costco, Fryes, plus new release sales at B&N, Borders). I'm guessing XI will be an excellent seller in the BR format.

I know I'm buying it that way. The recession has hit me hard (I'm a realtor), but I will sell my blood if necessary.

Besides, it will be considerably less $$ than my beloved Criterion Collection Blu-Rays. And having XI in gorgeous HD more than compensates for a digital copy I may or may not use. The price is actually typical for a hit films with extras.

I agree. I'd love to get a blue ray player, but all I've heard about the disks is that they're over priced. 40 bucks is my definition of overpriced.

I'll be getting the 2 disk DVD.

It'll probably run less than $40 in most places, but I will buy the 2-disk DVD unless I get a bluray player by then. I have no prob spending $30 for it.

Ok folks, what in the hell is Paramount thinking letting the retail price of the blu ray Star Trek release this November to be listed as 39.99??

Considering I saw the movie five times already, for an average of $13 per time, and again tomorrow for $10, $40 for a product I can own forever (or until the next format comes along) and watch it every day if I want to, sounds like a bargain to me.

I don't care if it's dearer than other movies. I want Star Trek, not other movies.

Paramount can put $100 on this and I'll pay it! Heck, my original Betamax version of ST:TMP was $79 in 1981. My Betamax version of ST II was also about $70, although the very next Paramount release ("Raiders of the Lost Ark") was the first Aussie release to be at a "new lower price" of $40.

I know exactly what you mean but don't let Paramount hear you say that!

On my more pessimistic days, I believe they count on this fan "reaction" - their double-dipping, triple-dipping of TOS, as a prime example.

e.g. Oh, here's two episodes for $15, now here's the whole season for $120, next here is it on HD-DVD for ??, and now Blu-ray (for less than DVD!!)

^CrusherDisciple... the 2-Disk DVD has the same MSRP..

You have to be flippin' kidding me. :wtf:
Nope.

I thought it was high too, until I looked at comparable films MSRPs.

To give an example of recent Blu-ray MSRPs:

Iron Man $39.99
Transformers $39.99
Watchmen $35.99
The Dark Knight $35.99
Quantum of Solace $39.99
Hellboy II $39.98
Kung Fu Panda $39.99
The Departed $34.99
Casino Royale $38.96
Eagle Eye $39.99

You can get all of these movies easily under $25.

Okay, folks -- what the hell is it with people starting OMGWTF threads about the price tag (MSRP) on the Star Trek Blu-Ray/DVD?

Discussion of the DVD is already going on in this thread and I've already merged one price-tag thread with it. You'll find your price question answered there.
