2x10 'The Red Angel' Preview

I'm getting Contact vibes here, what with Burnham getting strapped into that chair. It looks like she's about to be beamed, projected, or otherwise sent to somewhere or sometime else. Is this Project Daedalus?

There are a heck of a lot of EVA suits on display here. That suggests that either their wearers too are going somewhere or the ship isn't being trusted to sustain life support. Could we be leading up to the abandonment of Discovery, per "Calypso"?

It appears that we're seeing Airiam's funeral. This opens up a new and rather Trekkian possibility: could she encounter some other intelligence and become the Red Angel? That might explain the bit about great loneliness.

That said, my money is still on an AI vs AI showdown. It's hard for me to imagine that Chabon wrote a story about Discovery's AI in the future and that won't be revisited in a season that is shaping up to be about AI in the future.

Thanks for posting this. It was missing from the broadcast stream I was watching on Amazon last night.

Spock's beard seems to be getting longer. Burnham tearing up at Airiam funeral?

Things that are back:
Burnham's monologue
Culber
Burnham/tyler romance

I feel like the monologue might be part of a eulogy at Airiam's funeral.

If it turns out that this is like contact I'm probably going to have this reaction:

The trailer gives away almost nothing about the plot, which stands in stark contrast to the earlier episodes. All we can really tell is that Airiam's funeral happens near the beginning of the episode, and Michael gets strapped into a chair.

Whatever happens next week is likely very, very important, and will solve a great deal of the mysteries of the season. Otherwise, they'd let on a little bit more about what the episode was purportedly about.

We also see another red burst, unless I'm misinterpreting something?

I think so too! Also the episode’s title (‘The Red Angel’) is indicative of this being a significant part of the season arc

Indeed. Somehow, while I really liked this season overall, I found myself mostly enjoying all the different "side-mission" so far - they are what really gave this show it's distinct "Trek"-feel this season. Wheras the main arc still has to convince me.

I'm not complaining though - having all the Trek-like one-off adventures be integrated into a larger season arc IMO really works. So even if I end up a little disappointed with the season's main arc, the simple fact that it's there gives this show a real modern feel, and IMO elevates a lot of the characterisations and gives better context to the individual adventures.
