26 March, 2015: 10th Anniversary of the broadcast of 'Rose'

Wow! It does not seem like 10 years since I first saw Rose and Nine! Then again, I have a lot of difficulty believing that it has been over 31 years since I first watched scarf-clad Tom Baker and Sarah Jane foiling a Sontaran's plan as I watched on PBS in Upstate NY! Happy Anniversary!

Although we had to wait a couple more weeks for it to air in Canada, I remember premiere night well. After the show was over, my uncle, a huge fan of classic era Who called me up to discuss the episode, this being my first introduction to the Who universe. Rather excitedly he asked "well, wasn't that great?" and I reservedly replied "it was...acceptable." Ironically, it was the Aliens of London two parter that first got me starting to think the show was something more than "acceptable."

Those post show phone calls became our tradition during the Eccleston season which unfortunately we weren't really able to keep doing during the subsequent seasons. Oh we still manage to have our discussions on the episodes within a day or two after they aired, but there was something about having a live discussion about it as it was still fresh in our minds that really enhanced the show for me that year anyway.

Wow, time flies by! Congratulations to everyone involved during the past 10 years. Bringing back a show like Doctor Who in a form that is popular amongst fans both old and new is an amazing accomplishment!

What was it about the Aliens in London two parter that convinced you, if you don't mind me asking. I remember when that episode first aired and I think the common reaction was "Farting Aliens?"

For me, I actually didn't start with Rose. I was flipping the channels and saw End of the World, and one of the things that I liked about it was it reminded me of Farscape, being that lone human (Rose) amongst a multi-tude of aliens and those aliens kind of being a little wacky (Wasn't one of them trees). Also, the big thing I remembered about that episode was them using Britney Spears (I think it was Toxic) and my reaction was, yep it does have that Farscape kind of uniqueness.

10 years later and I've seen 4 Doctors, like 10 companions, and a nice introduction into the Doctor Who universe. I still don't really understand why he's called The Doctor though, as Doctors are supposed to help/cure people and death follows him where ever he goes, other than The Empty Child/Doctor Dances. Maybe that was the irony when they named his character back in '63?

But then real Doctors are surrounded by death all the time as well, if you put yourself in the position of trying to heal people invariably you will see a lot of death, and a lot of the darker parts of life. I think he’s exceptionally well named really.

I've been a fan for three and a half years. Its OK.

Anyway, Rose remains the best introductory episode to Doctor Who. Its beyond perfect - the premise and main character succintly presented, the companion aptly portrayed as her own person, and a unique sci-fi plot to boot. I like the first episode of An Unearthly Child, but if you want to introduce someone, or be introduced into Doctor Who?

Rose.

I remember thinking that it was a bit silly (Mickey being eaten by a bin, anyone?) but enjoyable. Eccleston and Piper impressed me more than the story or script. I was more intrigued by the preview of the following week's story.

I never would have anticipated the show becoming the phenomenon it has, to be honest, but obviously I'm glad it has.

I think my feelings were pretty much the same. It seemed a trifle too childish in places, and a little overblown (cue overly dramatic music etc.) but it was funny and clearly there was something wonderful waiting beneath the surface, Eccleston and Piper were great and, like you, it was probably the preview for The End of the World that hooked me more.

It isn’t a great episode, but as a stripped down introduction to a show with so much history it does the job well.

Been a fan since 1983! Was very excited when they brought the show back. Over the past 10 years I'm even a bigger fan than what I was.

Those are pretty much my thoughts as well. The main thing about Rose is that it showed great potential. It wasn't a bad story, just not great. But, you could tell there was tons of potential waiting to be mined. So, I was very optimistic at the time.

The preview for the End of the World looked great, and it was a great story. I had a few worries early on. The farting aliens had me a bit concerned, but fortunately turned out to be nothing other than a bump in the road!

I remember that the episode workprint actually leaked a bit early-something that still unfortunately still happens today (with half of Capaldi's first season).

SciFi Channel aired Rose and End of the World back to back as the premiere.

After Rose, I thought that was OK, hopefully it'll get better, but, still, it was worth the time to watch it. End of the World impressed me much more

I think it had more to do with the fact that the Aliens of London was the first story to actually start developing the world that existed in the show. Rose, End of the World and The Unquiet Dead were all sort of introductory stories, Aliens of London was building on things already established and was immersing the viewer in the world these characters lived in. I didn't mind farting aliens as much as everyone else seems to, even though I do remember at the time thinking it a bit anti-climactic that the villains just turned out to be a criminal family, even though today I consider that part of their charm.

Although it was Aliens of London which really got me interested in the show, it was the episode Dalek that finally sold me and converted me as a fan. That episode is just so awesome, even now a decade later still feels as fresh when I watch it as it did that first time.

In fact, season 1 might very well be the only season where the Daleks actually felt menacing. Yeah, I know why they keep getting used, have even pointed it out to others in other threads, but nothing from seasons 2-8 makes the Daleks feel as threatening as they did back then. Although Into the Dalek did have some of the finest Dalek action scenes in the show, period.

This could be interesting.

The new DWM is doing a 10th Anniversary Special and will feature what I'm pretty sure is the first ever post-transmission interview with Keith ("I helped make Eccleston quit") Boak about making those first few episodes.

The question is, is ten years long enough for some warts and all revelations. Watch out for flying (and flaming) sofas...

The Three Doctors was the original 10th anniversary. Maybe Omega will finally make his comeback in the nu-10th.

McGann, Tennant, Smith & Capaldi in The Four Doctors?

I'd wish they'd reboot Blake's 7.
