Fox is developing a 24 spinoff that would revolve around a new twentysomething male terrorist hunter, but the intention would be for Kiefer Sutherland‘s Jack to weave in and out as a guest star, franchise overlord Howard Gordon confirmed to TVLine Sunday at the Critics Choice Television Awards.

The project would find the new male antihero working alongside an older, more seasoned female agent (not Yvonne Strahovski’s Kate Morgan, although she also may appear). It would also launch as a limited series, similar to last year’s acclaimed 24: Live Another Day, but I’m told the offshoot could easily become a long-term property for Fox.

A 24 series without Jack Bauer as a lead? I really not sure about that. Also I really liked Yvonne Strahovski’s Kate Morgan so it's disappointing that she's not going to be there (hopefully she can make a few appearances though).

I am extremely skeptical at this point that a 24 series without Jack Bauer as the lead can work. Jack Bauer really made 24 what it was. Without him, it simply won't have the same "charm" if you will.

I like the intent for it to be a limited series, but am disappointed that they're looking for a young male lead. They should try for Yvonne Strahovski to reprise Kate Murphy as lead and if she passes, bring in another actress as the central character.

Personally, I'd rather they get Kiefer Sutherland for whatever he'll agree to and just have it be the final 24 and leave it there.

It had seemed they were setting up Yvonne Strahovski as someone to spin off with, which really could have worked. She was pretty good as female Jack Bauer.

A new show would have to work pretty hard to build up a new JB.

Yvonne Strahovski is awesome. The fact they want a new male lead is completely bullshit. They should have Yvonne Strahovski and if it becomes long running just introduce new male and female characters.

The fact they want another male lead is pathetic. I'll be passing.

The steady stream of "DAMMIT!" and "Who are you working for?!?" and "We don't have time for this!" would definitely not sound the same without Kiefer...

And is there anyone else who can drive all the way across L.A. in five minutes?

Hm, I don't know about a Jack-less 24, that would probably work as well as The X-Files did without Mulder and Scully, but I would love to see a Chloe O'Brian spinoff.

I'd still be interested in a Jack-less 24. As much as he makes the show work, it's the format and action quotient that's so exciting.

I think someone new would be the wrong direction to go. If there's no Kiefer, what about bringing back as many other characters as you can? Tony, Chloe, Kate, Adam (Zachary Quinto), Doyle (Ricky Schroeder), Aaron, even Kim.

I thought they were gonna try and do another limited series with Kiefer? Did that idea die or is this spin-off in addition to that?

Sounds like there will be another limited series that will be like a bridge between the two.

I'm most curious about what it will be called.

All I want is for the A-Team (Kate, Chloe, Tony, and Aaron) to assemble and break Jack out of Russia!

Bring back Tony. His character arc was one of the more stupid things on the show (and there are quite few to choose from), you can only go up from here.

I'm not sure what the title would be..but promos would have to say "My name is Jack Bauer, and today is the last day of my life..."

That'd work for me.

24 was supposed to be an ensemble show...then they made it the Jack Bauer show. And unfortunately, over the years, they've killed off most of Jack's possible replacements.

I don't think they can ever replace Jack -- they should just go for the team/ensemble format. Just let the others have normal lives, and not just be there to be a problem.

It sucks they aren't going with Yvonne Strahovski as a lead. She was great in LAD and I think she would have been a good replacement for Sutherland. Not sure if I will watch this new series because of that now.

They could always make the new series as a Trek spinoff. Set it on Bajor, starring Kira or somebody like her.

What would they call it? 26, of course...

Yeah, I was unsure at first but over the course of that season they did a good job of making her work and really buyable as a replacement for Kiefer.

Not sure I'd agree with the first part there. I mean, season 1 started off with the voiceover 'my name is Jack Bauer and today is the longest day of my life.' I think later seasons have focussed on the ever-changing supporting casts as much as it did. The later casts may not have been as charismatic as the original (though for the most part, I'd say they were pretty watchable) but I don't think they got less screen time.

As to the original subject, well, obviously I'd rather see another season of 24 starring Jack, be it 12 or 24 episodes. Particularly given how LAD ended. Unless Kiefer is refusing to do it or seeking too much money, I don't know why they don't just do that.

There is obviously scope to do a series simply called CTU or the like. Scrapping the real-time concept would bring advantages and disadvantages. The concept of the show itself works well enough as a thriller but the ticking clock gave it something different in the start. But as time went on, it also limited and hampered the writing at times, IMHO.

The thing is though, when 24 was at its worst, it was Jack/Kiefer who held it together. He's such a charismatic and watchable actor and such an intriguing and flawed hero that he'll be hard to replace in either a spin-off or straight-up replacement in the central show. It could be done but the comparisons will be a daunting task for any actor.

Hopefully this is all just a bluff to force Kiefer to agree to reprise the part of Bauer again.
