That point aside, it's not hard to imagine a "big brother" to your Daedalus, combining your concepts with Masao's Moskova, or Hyperion or Lancaster, to come up with an alternative to the odd-looking design for the Bonaventure from TAS "Time Trap".

Like the yellow band, they're part of the part I used to make the primary hulls. I can't take them off. I haven't assigned them a "function".

I will: they're a kind of proto-ablative armor that Earth and the Coalition experimented with during the Earth-Romulan Conflict. Deflector screens (force fields) proved more effective.

They are also external hull housings for solar panels, so if there is a ship-wide power failure/reactor jettison, the armor slides off to the side and exposes the photo-voltaic cells, allowing them to capture starlight so the ship can serve as its own lifeboat. ;-)
