21 Jump Street remake looks like a train wreck

I don't know if it aired in the US, but during the Canadian feed of the Oscars last night they showed a trailer for the 21 Jump Street remake. Which appears to be a comedy (I don't think the original show was a sitcom, was it?). And godawful. Looks like another in a long, long line of TV show remakes that completely misses out on what made the original TV show popular.

Or am I missing something and the film is actually a heavy-hitting action drama that, for some reason, had a comedy trailer made for broadcast during the Oscars?

Alex

For some reason, other than Trek, it seems as if nearly every TV show that Hollywood remakes as a movie has to be turned into a comedy.

"Miami Vice" movie wasn't a comedy, though for some reason some people wanted it to be. "It would fun to see out of place 80's cops in pastel suits in the 21st century." No, it would've been total crap, a bad sketch comedy bit.

"Lost in Space" movie wasn't a comedy, either. In that case, I almost wish it had been...Matt LeBlanc's presence would've made more sense (not that he was ever funny) and that CGI monkey creature would've been intentionally laughably terrible looking.

Hence my use of the phrase "nearly every".

And, yeah, of all the TV shows NOT to be remade as a comedy they pick Lost in Space, which was-except for the first season-basically a comedy anyway?

I've seen a trailer twice now...disappointed and revolted sums it up nicely.

However much Depp might be getting paid for his cameo, it isn't enough.

The saddest part is that people who never watched the actual series are now going to get entirely the wrong impression.

^Yeah, it looks pretty lame. The "Stupid Cops movie" has already been made many times and it's usually not funny. I don't know why they even bother to call it 21 Jump Street to begin with.

Still bitter about that Ackroyd/Hanks Dragnet movie, aren't you? ;)

I mentioned Miami Vice because I read a fews times about how it should've been a comedy...that gives me the impression that Hollywood thinks the public wants any movie based on an old tv show to be a farce. So we get shit like 21 Jump Street, Land of the Lost and Green Hornet.

Although I agree with the idea that 21 Jump Street is going to suck, I also disagree with calling it a "remake". In the trailer, the police boss type guy references "an undercover program from the 80's".

My assumption is that this is supposed to take place in the same world as the 21 Jump Street TV series. It's just going to suck.

Yeah, I agree. I guess it's easier to write a comedy? I've always been disappointed by that. At least the Dukes of Hazzard movie is more like the original in terms of tone, but they actually turned the prequel into a teen-style movie which took a dump all over the franchise.

Seriously? What wrong impression? That the TV show was actually brilliant TV?

It may not have been brilliant, but the trailers I've seen make it look so. It certainly wasn't a comedy designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator, as the film appears to be.

How could 21 Jump Street POSSIBLY be a train wreck? It stars OSCAR NOMINEE Jonah Hill! And Channing Tatum is the Pacino, De Niro, Hoffman, Hackman, Redford, Newman, Nicholson of our time!

Yeah, I'm amused at how people are getting protective of a show that was a pile of shite to begin with. The whole concept was so silly that it can only be revived as a comedy, if you ask me.

No. The trailers are the trailers for this movie. It doesn't reflect ANYTHING upon the show--which no one really remembers--certainly not the people they are trying to get to come and see this movie--they weren't BORN yet.

The original show was a teen soap wrapped in a cop show. It was shit too.

I liked the show. It was not as good as (for example) "The Equalizer", but it did have little of what I like about the shows of the 80:s. Drug dealers, murders, prostitution, gang wars, and so on. It became worse when the cast began to change, but that's usually the case.

The shows of today (CSI and so on) is a bit to glossy for my taste. I want a litte "Death Wish" or "The Warriors"-vibe.

Still one of the best openings for a TV-show ever (The Equalizer):

My point is that people with no knowledge of the actual show are likely to think this movie in some way is representative of it; from everything I've seen, it's not. I thought I'd made that clear previously.

I remember the show clearly enough, thank you very much, and it certainly wasn't a teen soap.
