21 Dec 2013: 50th anniversary of The Daleks

It's a good idea, although I don't have access to it at the moment, so I guess I won't be. Have fun, though.

You should find it on Dailymotion (Streaming site like Youtube). Google Videos "Dailymotion The Daleks Playlist" or some variation thereof

Good idea. I'm not a big fan of the serial but I've only seen it once years ago and I'm willing to give it another shot to prove itself.

I have the "Beginning" box set, so that will make things a tad easier.

Sincerely,

Bill

Technically, though it's only the anniversary of the sucker - their full appearance wasn't revealed until the 28th...

Quite right; they just made it "under the wire" for 1963. '64 was much more the "Year of the Daleks". Hey, there's a story title for ya'. They pretty much served to "bookend" 1964 with the last episode of the "Dalek Invasion of Earth" (their second appearance) concluding on "Boxing Day", December 26 of that year.

Sincerely,

Bill

You could say that 22nd Nov was the day... that's when the actual casings first turned up in studio. With the cast hearing about jfk between rehearsal and recording.

I just finished Gallifrey Adventures Audios Series 6 this morning (I thoroughly enjoyed it), so, I figure, I'll go for a Gallifrey related Daleks Serial, Genesis of The Daleks (Are The Time Lords involved in any of Pertwee's Dalek Serials?)

Planet of the Daleks: They direct the Doctor to Spiridon after he's injured in Frontier in Space, but...

you don't actually see them.

Well, I popped my DVD into the player around 5:30 PM local time to re-experience the opening episode.

I had totally forgotten the endearing interplay centered around the food-omatic device, particularly the lil' zinger about seasoning.

(The Doctor takes two blocks out of the dispensing slot)
SUSAN: Eggs and bacon.
DOCTOR: Bacon and eggs.
IAN: What, this?
SUSAN: Go on, try it.
(They unwrap the blocks and take a small bite)
DOCTOR: Well?
IAN: Mm. Not bad. What do you think, Barbara?
BARBARA: I think it's delicious.
IAN: My bacon's a bit salty.
DOCTOR: It shouldn't be. It's English.

Despite his original cynical concerns that the food might taste of engine grease, Ian humbly admits that he finds it remarkable, amazed that with each bite, the taste alternates between the eggs and bacon.

It's a little thing, but it represents Ian's growing respect for the Doctor, despite the fact the Doctor flat out kidnapped them at the climax of "An Unearthly Child". Then again, he could be developing a Stockholm syndrome.

The model work for "the city" is quite elaborate and its detail certainly counters the arguments that classic era Doctor Who looks "cheap". Ironically, that miniature is far more detailed than the equivalent model built for the AARU theatrical Dalek movie starring Peter Cushing. They even went to the effort of painting a background mural that closely matched the designs of the physical model.

Sincerely,

Bill

Which they had to build twice cos it got junked after ep1 was filmed and needed to be remounted for the reshoot.

I think.
